Man Jumps from Vehicle and Runs from Police

UPDATE: Police say the man who ran from them carrying an assault rifle on Monday is 28-year-old Damein Mandell Mackey.

Around 4 pm today, a man driving a van was being followed by CMPD patrol units. Apparently, he got nervous and jumped and ran from the vehicle he was driving. As of right now, it looks like he decided to jump and run before officers even initiated a traffic stop. Police say the man pulled his van over, got out with a large rifle and ran near Sandhurst Drive.

Officers set up a perimeter and police were able to find the man hiding in the bushes. Police recovered an SKS rifle, as well as a handgun. Neither weapon was loaded, but officers did find a magazine for the rifle. A K-9 unit was dispatched to the scene to conduct an article search to assist patrol officers conduct their area search of the ground covered by the suspect.

No shots were fired and no one was injured during the incident. Police are still investigating. The suspects name and charges have not been released.

Kilborne and Sandhurst do not intersect so I am curious where this actually took place. Kilborne and Sandhurst run parallel to each other. Perhaps was it Eastway and Kilborne or Kilborne and Telford?

Great question... I only printed what was sent out by CMPD. I will contact the media officer for more information. Don't hold your breath... he isn't very good about getting back to me.

I live on Townsend Ave and the green mini van was at corner of Townsend and Eastway around 3:30-4pm and missing a front tire with 5-6 police cars parked around the block.

I'm beginning to think thugs in their high teens and 20s are the result of crack head mothers using the drug while pregnant. Now their babies are all grown up. That's the only reason I can think of why many of the crimes seem to be so poorly planned, over-the-top violent, and seemingly spur of the moment.

To the individual who made the comment time stamped 11:24 AM. It would be wise of you to actually know the facts prior to making generalizations and unfounded comments. I personally know the family of this suspect. Both his parents are middle-class, hard-working, tax-paying, contributing members of the Charlotte community. His behavior and criminal activity is of his own doing. NOT the failure of his parents. Damein was presented with all the opportunities (a stable and comfortable homelife & access to higher education) to make something of himself. HE chose not to. DO NOT put the blame on his parents, especially when you don't know them. Period!

I agree. His parents must be idiots themselves.
