Parent Arrested for Boarding School Bus

Otis Melvin Shirley, 28, was arrested yesterday after he boarded a CMS school bus headed for Sedgefield Elementary School and caused trouble.

Otis boarded the bus and made threatening comments to the bus driver and the students on the ride to school. When the bus arrived at the school, Otis got off the bus and threatened a school employee, who called police.

Otis was arrested and charged with trespassing on a school bus and disorderly conduct. It is unlawful to ride a school bus unless acting as a chaperone. I would like to know why the bus driver allowed this man on the bus in the first place!

I guess with the quality of the school system, it's not unreasonable to think a 28 year old is still in elementary school!

According to the story I read, the reason the driver let him on the bus was because he was acting in an official capacity LEO, he was an off duty Matthews police officer the first time he did this recently, so since he was invited on, no charges were filed. But then the most recent indcident (likely from previous intimidation let him on the bus) he was not voluntarily invited on, so charges are filed, and he's been let go of his post, according to the tv news site, can't remember which one, WSOC maybe...

They are two separate incidents. The first involved a woman (police officer) and this is another one. I do not believe this guy is LEO.

From WSOC:

"A mother got board a school bus earlier this month near Pineville and yelled at Community House Middle School students who she said had been bullying her daughter.

The woman, who was an off-duty Matthews police officer at the time, was let go from her post.

No charges were filed in that instance because the bus driver invited the parent onboard believing she was acting as a police officer.

Despite the two incidents, CMS officials say they don't plan on making any changes to the bus policy.

A spokesman said drivers are told to report anyone who doesn't belong on their buses, and CMS officials say parents should report problems on the bus to the school first."

See what happens when babies have babies?

Since when is it okay for any adult to pick on children. This is absurd. His child is doomed!

Personally, I think it is quite rude to make fun of Otis regardless of what the accusations are against him. If he is disadvantaged and unable to afford a computer, thats no laughing matter. All of us have had financial troubles at some point in our lives.

It's also in poor taste to make fun of someone's lack of formal education. Not all of us are fortunate enough to be able to go college for one reason or another.

And the short bus joke, shame on the moderator for allowing such poor taste. Can someone with a physical handicap or Down's Syndrome really help that they have to ride the short bus?

Shame on you for posting these type of comments!

Obviously Otis needs to be on the bus. I believe he needs to be on school grounds also. He needs serious help learning english!!!!

Evelyn,

To be honest, it didn’t even startle me as rude because I took a short bus to school. I lived in a rural area and we didn’t have enough kids to fill a bus! Not all kids who take a short bus are handicapped.

However, since you brought it to my attention, I do see your point on how that can be offensive and I will delete and re-post the comment less the short bus statement.

Otis does need serious help learning English. The poster stated the truth based on the comment Otis left. You stated, “Not all of us are fortunate enough to be able to go college for one reason or another.” And you are right. However, we are all offered education to the 12th grade for free! He should know how to read and write properly by the 3rd grade.

I don’t see anyone making fun of his financial situation- if he even has one. Hell, I live paycheck to paycheck and I have a decent job! I am not sitting here in my glass house throwing stones and I don’t see anyone else doing that either.

You are entitled to your opinion and so are others- but I really think you are reading into the comments too much. I cannot appease everyone with my comment moderations. Before you ‘shame’ me, you should know I do my best to weed out the nonsense comments. I am human and very busy so I do make mistakes!

Otis said: "dey is just hAvivn fun."

Kind of like the children on the bus were having fun bullying your child?

What goes around comes around.

to all those concerned about 'OTIS'. First, dont be surprised that Otis didnt write his little statement. It probably was made by someone named John or Frank. Too bad you could not see through this prank, I think you all were taken. If by chance Otis was the author lets not blame the school system as usual. put the blame on the ones sitting in the chairs, for whatever reason. lets stop blaming the professionals who try their best to teach those who are unteachable.

Bravo Oncrime!!! Your response to Evelyn addresing her concerns about comments posted here were straight to the point and right on target.

Evelyn seems to be a little too sensitive about Otis. Actually, Otis doesn't deserve any sympathy. Any grown man who doesn't know it's wrong to threaten children is too far gone for any help.

It's a shame that it's harder for a person to get a drivers license than to have children.

If there is anyone deserving of pity here, it's this thug's child who has no proper role model and will probably end up on this website someday.
