Around 8:30 last night, a CMPD officer responded to the corner of Grace Street and Union Street in reference to a 911 call advising dispatchers 15 people were loitering at the street corner. The officer responded to the street corner and asked the group of loiters to move along. The group started to disperse and the officer drove around the corner to watch and make sure the group left the area.
Moments later, a blue sedan pulled down Grace Street and the driver pointed a handgun outside the front driver’s window and began shooting at the group of people walking away from the area. The shooting continued as the suspect approached the police officer sitting in his patrol car at the corner of Grace Street and Barry Street.
As the shooting suspect approached the officer's car, he pulled his arm and the gun back inside his car window and the CMPD Officer did not return fire. Thankfully, none of the bystanders were injured in the shooting, however, police say a house on Union Street was struck by bullets fired from the suspect's handgun.
After the suspect pulled the handgun back inside his car, a brief pursuit ensued which lasted about one minute before the pursuit was called off. Police officers from the Eastway Division and the Street Crimes Division established a perimeter but were unable to locate the suspect vehicle or suspect in this case. No arrests have been made yet.
Police have completed offense reports including charges of Assault on a Government Employee and Shooting into an Occupied Dwelling. Police said none of the people who were shot at in the crowd have come forward to request a report. Police have not released a description of the suspect, however, if you have any information, please call CrimeStoppers at 704-334-1600.

Why would police call the chase OFF after one minute? Is shooting at a police officer not a chaseable offense in Charlotte?
Damn politics and lawyers is why...If the guy begin chased gets in a wreck he can SUE the Cmpd for chasing him...
THis is BS he shot at people and they called the chase off they should have chased him down and shot him and said oops was to be a warning shot
perfect example of why we are so ineffective in CLT. The officer made little attempt at communicating and interacting with the "loiterers" when the 911 call obviously knew what was going on.
The LEO then had a number of options available to him that the report does not cite..that may have helped in identification and better chance of arrest. A squad dash camera? a couple bullets into the body of the sedan to help identify it later? I mean, what the heck? there was open public panic gunfire and an LEO at the scene witnessed and did not have weapon drawn and ready to play?!
Cheif Stephens will be extra proud of this one..he loves the gentle approach and some of his employees are proving his training. there is a very violent criminal on the loose tonight in our city and totally prepared to shoot into a crowd..WTF?!
I do not know why the chase was called off. I have sent this question to the CMPD Media Dept. & I will update if and when I receive a response.
I think the last commenter is making assumptions without knowing all the facts in this case. Remember, I only report what information police release and they NEVER release everything. None of us know if the officer had his weapon drawn or not. We do not know what kind of contact the officer had with the loiters. We do not know what evidence the police have in their possession from the crime scene. None of this information was not released in the CMPD statement.
I don’t think it is fair to blame anyone until you know all the facts in the case and only the police have this information.
deballing
"Rap star Cam'ron says there's no situation -- including a serial killer living next door -- that would cause him to help police in any way, because to do so would hurt his music sales and violate his "code of ethics."" That is what 's wrong with America today, well at least one of the things.
I received an update from police today. The reason the chase was ended was because the officer lost sight of the suspect's vehicle.
Why not return fire?
