Two CMPD Officers Killed in the Line of Duty

I am sad to report two Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Officers were shot and killed last night. Both officers worked in the North Tryon Division and were killed in the line of duty.

Chief Stephens solemnly delivered the terrible news this morning during a 5:30 am press conference at Police Headquarters. He told us two officers responded to a disturbance call at the Timber Ridge Apartments off Barrington Drive around 10:30 pm.

The two officers were both shot in the head by a suspect around 11:15 pm. Both officers were shot from behind and never fired their weapons. This was not a murder, but an execution of these brave men. The two officers were rushed to CMC and passed away a short time later.

Chief Stephens said the two fallen officers are named Sean Clark, 34 (Top Photo) and Jeff Shelton, 35 (Bottom Photo). Officer Clark started with CMPD in January 2006. Officer Shelton started with CMPD in April 2001. Both officers leave behind a wife and Officer Clark leaves behind a three year old son and his wife is expecting their second child.

The Chief did not give many details about the shooting since the investigation is continuing. After the shooting, police set up a two-mile perimeter around the apartment complex and closed several roads to search the area.

CMPD Officers, the K-9 unit and SWAT team searched the ground and the police helicopter searched for the suspects by air. As of now, police have not made any arrests in the shooting.

The last time a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer was shot and killed in the line of duty was in 1993, when Officer Anthony Nobles and Officer John Burnette were shot and killed after a foot chase with a suspect.

If you have any information about the shooting, please call CrimeStoppers at 704-334-1600. -View CMPD Press Release-

This is very sad and tragic. I hope they locate the shooters ASAP!

This makes me sick to my stomach. How tragic. These two guys helping to keep our streets safe and gunned down by thugs. I hope someone comes forward with some information to help catch these low lifes.

Horrible, senseless, tragic, what a waste of two young lives. My utmost sympathies to their family, the city cries with you.

What an OUTRAGE! My first thought; were the murderer(s) of these two police officers done by a repeat offender let-off by our woefully inadequate court system yet AGAIN?? Would these two officers still be alive if Raleighs funding were better for our courts, or if we had better judges?? Crimes such as this are historically committed by REPEAT OFFENDERS!

This is just another tragic result of Charlotte’s casual attitude to incarcerating and punishing criminals. Certainly, the killing of these officers was not their first crime.

Let’s hope they are caught quickly. Cop killers represent a very serious risk to everyone else – facing the death penalty if caught means they have nothing to lose!

My sincerest sympathies to the families of these officers.

It's not all about funding from Raleigh - remember, our mayor and city council are spending over $150 million dollars on that ridiculous NASCAR Hall of Fame! Imagine how many criminals could receive proper punishment for that amount!

It just goes to show where their priorities are. Charlotte is ranked the 8th most dangerous city in the country, but the mayor decides to build a monument to the history of idiots riding around in circles rather than address the serious problem of crime in this city!!!

This is a horrendous and senseless crime. I pray those responsible are suffering and continue to suffer until they are in jail.

My heart goes out to the officer’s families and other police officers who are mourning the loss of two friends. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

My deepest sympathies to the families of these officers. One day we will build a huge wall around east Charlotte and let all these thugs stay inside it and kill each other instead of law enforcement officers. At the same time this horrendous crime occurred, more thugs were shooting guns at the Bahama Mama Club, also in east Charlotte.

Why stop at building a wall around East Charlotte??? There is no place safe in this town!!!

Let's just turn Charlotte into a maximum security prison. The vast majority of crimals in NC already live here. Those of us with any brains are already planning our escape to some place safer.

It's got to be cheaper than that NASCAR museum that other person mentioned.

I think we all forget how dangerous being law enforcement really is.

What a tragedy.

I hope that someone sets up a trust for the families left behind.

This makes me just furious. It stinks to die working a job where you are just trying to make an honest living, and savage thugs think it is "okay" to take your life.

My father grew up in Vale, NC, and most of his sisters and brothers wound up in Charlotte.

My aunts, uncles, and all of my cousins had to move from their life-long homes because the ghetto crept over them as time passed. When I visit, I am afraid to go to the cemetery where my grandmother is buried because the ghetto has surrounded it.

God help Charlotte. It breaks my heart. I have been going to visit the area since I was a baby 44 years ago, and it's so sad to see how run over with crime it has become. I hope the good people still left in Charlotte can keep safe and maybe overcome this plague. You're in my heart and prayers.

To often there are not enough officers on duty to provide proper backup. Many times one division will have to borrow out of team to assist. Officers are sent into violent areas without the backup they need, but we needed light rail didn't we. I dare the Mayor to comment on the death of these officers!

I just watched the raw feeds of the trajedy on WSOC website. I was stunned when I heard some people taunting the police as they drove by to the scene! I can't believe it. Will someone else watch them and see if I am somehow mistaken?
I'm pretty sure thats what was going on, I'm at a loss to describe the type of individual that would do this. I wish the media would catch onto this.

My prayers go out to the officer's wife who is pregnanant. It's so sad that a another child will not grow up without the father because of stupidity!!!!

Pat McCrory is conspicuously absent in the midst of all this. Why??

To the fellow police officers, families and friends of these two outstanding men, I send my deepest sympathy.

I am a police officer from South Dakota and saw the article on cnn and felt that I needed to send my condolences.

I say outstanding men because as a police officer I know what goes on and it isn’t everyday that somebody will put their life on the line to protect others.

My prayers and thoughts are with you all.

Pat McCrory is conspicuously absent because he is complicit!!! His lack of attention to the crime in Charlotte is the reason there is so much violence here!!! He’s more concerned with a NASCAR museum and a baseball stadium uptown then dealing with crime. In the end we all suffer while he blames Raleigh!

I'm the son of a police officer who died in the line of duty. I was 19 when it happened and I can say from experience, the scars never fade.

We should build housing for all the felons released from Mecklenberg County jail right next to where Good Ol' Boy Pat lives - then we'll finally see some action from our corupt city council!!!

I have no respect for the man.

I do, however, have immense respect for any man with the courage to wear a badge and put his life on the line to protect us!

You are right on the money PeeJay. Mayor Pat McCrory and the City Council pretend to support the Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers but they kick them in the face each year they go without a raise…

They can try and fool the citizens of Charlotte all they want but they haven’t fooled the great men and women who protect and serve our city!

In my opinion, it is a good thing Mayor McCrory is not involved or making his presence known during this terrible tragedy. CMPD officers are suffering a tremendous loss of two of their brothers. I don’t think they need any added stress the Mayor would bring.

I am extremely saddened by the loss of these two great police officers. I am also very angry someone would take the life of two officers who are always there to protect us, no matter what. I pray the person(s) responsible are found and prosecuted to the furthest extent of the law.

My thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the fallen officers and with the great men and women at the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department and their families. Please know the citizens of Charlotte are praying for you and support you!

CMPD’s Fallen Officers are never forgotten:

Officer James "Jimmy" Moran, Officer John Franklin Fesperman, Officer Reid, Detective Harvey Edgar "Ed" Correll ,Officer William S. Rogers, Detective Thomas Jenkins, Officer Benjamin H. Frye, Officer Charles P. Nichols, Officer Rufus Biggers, Detective Charlie Herbert Baker, Officer Johnny Reed Annas, Sgt. Lewis Edward Robinson Sr., Officer Ronnie E. McGraw, Officer Edmond "Ed" Cannon, Officer Ernest Coleman, Officer Timothy Wayne "Tim" Whittington, Officer Robert Smith, Officer Milus "Terry" Lyles, Officer Eugene "Gene" Griffin, Officer John Burnette, Officer Andy Nobles, Sgt. Anthony Scott Futrell, Officer Jeff Shelton and Officer Sean Clark.

Police have just announced the arrest of Demetrius Montgomery with the 1st degree murders of the two officers.

wow - what do you know, he's been arrested four previous times and set loose to prey on us over and over again!

I'm sure his mom is very proud about what she unleashed on society!!!

My heart is breaking for the friends and familes of these officers. :( This is NOT the Charlotte I know!

Thank you CMPD officers for doing a thankless job, putting your lives on the line each day, to make Charlotte a city I am proud to call home.

Maybe it's time we all get together and have a Police Appreciation Day. It's a shame it takes something like this to remind us all of how much we owe to those behind the badge!

We walk for breast cancer and ride our bikes for MS - let's march for the soldiers of our streets!

I'm up for it!

OnCrime said...

Peejay,

I agree with you! We need to show the officers how much we appreciate them. I will look into this and see how I can organize such a thing. If anyone has any ideas or would like to help, please email me.

It is sad that it takes a terrible tragedy to open eyes but this is a reality in Charlotte. It will only get worse until we receive more funding for courts and the police department.

while the support is much appreciated - we need more cops on patrol! we as citizens need to pressure the powers that be to put more cops on the street asap!

rest in peace brothers..

You brave men and women. I salute you. My heart goes out to the mothers, fathers, children, wives and husbands of these two brave men.
You can show your support for CMPD officers in May. Officers will approach city council to beg for AVERAGE pay. Our officers are 8 percent below average pay based on other comparible departments. This is also National Police Week. Lets flood the government center and show our support for these brave men and women who go to work everyday knowing it may be thier last. I would like to thank WBT for their constant dedicated coverage to these officers on thier show Sunday. I was appalled when the Mayor's show came on and he dedicated his entire show to brining big business to charlotte!!!!!! Mayor you should be ashamed!! But at least we know where your priorities are....but then again we already did!!!
