If you haven't already, check out Tara Servatius' column in this weeks Creative Loafing.
Servatius discusses the North Carolina legislature's recent step toward becoming the nation's second state to pass a Racial Justice Act, legislation that gives defendants the opportunity to challenge the death penalty based on studies showing racial bias...

eh...they're just putting into writing, what is already happening anyway. Calculate in the stats for all the "racial" (translation: Black) arrests that are made, that wind up being dismissed and you'll have a picture that is no secret to Tara's typewriter, nor to thefolks that read & frequent this site. The disapointing thing is that we continue to excuse the black community for its poor performance in our society. That to me is more racist than anything.
If we truly believe in racial equality then stop all the accomodation.
I concure.
The numbers don't lie.
If the majority of murders are committed by "minorities", the number of death penalties handed down to "minorities" would reflect that number, right?
Unfortunately, you only see what the media wants you to see. The majority of eligible death penalty inmates are white, but the actual inmates who get the death penalty are mainly black. Black people do not commit the most crimes, we just get framed the most. Look at how many black men have been freed from prison in the last 10 years due to wrongful accusations. They were DNA tested and found not guilty of the crimes they were accused of committing. It's been over 20 in the last 2 years!! I'm not excusing the ignorance of any true criminals, but please realize crime sees no color or race.
As Tara Servatius points out in her article in Creative Loafing, the FBI's 2005 statistics indicate discrimination against white inmates.
While 38% of those arrested in NC for murder were white, 39% of those on death row were white.
Conversely, 57% of those arrested for murder were black, while only 53% of those on death row are black.
The numbers don't support the racial injustice myth. They do seem to indicate reverse discrimination.
Being "on" death row and actually being killed by lethal injection are different. You can "live" on death row til you naturally die, I said check the statistics on how many black people on death row actually die!!
To Anon @ 10:12 pm:
Better yet, you find the statistics that back up your claim and share them with us.
Again, so many claims of injustices and so little proof.
Had a feeling you would say that,so as soon as I logged of I did find the statistics.
93% of african american/latino death row inmates actually recieve death by lethal injection or electric chair
24% of caucasian death row inmates actually recieved death by lethal injection or electric chair.
2% of asian death row inmates actually recieved death by lethal injection or electric chair.
What is the source of those stats, i.e., NCIC, FBI Uniform Crime Report, some other verifiable source?
There is so much disinformation out there, particulary among death penalty opponents.
Ms. Servatius clearly indicates her source as the FBI Uniform Crime Report, yet people want to argue the legitimacy of her source.
The other numbers be touted on here in the comments, absent a verifiable source, are simply more disinformation.
