NAACP-vs- Mayor McCrory

The NAACP is seeking an apology from Charlotte's Mayor Pat McCrory for a statement he made in a letter to city manager Curt Walton regarding the 4th of July. McCrory wrote, "...Too many of our youth, primarily African American, are imitating and/or participating in a gangster type of dress, attitude, behavior and action..."

Am I missing something here? Why is the NAACP upset with McCrory? As far as I am concerned, Mayor McCrory hit the nail on the head. If you take a look at juvenile crime in Charlotte... it IS the African-American males who are the majority of the offenders and most of them do dress like gangsters!

Is the NAACP going to continue to criticize McCrory or will they take action to help the struggling youth in this city? I think we need less talk and more action... More @ Observer

Let's see....McCrory didn't lie, didn't even exaggerate, he has a constitutional right and guarantee to free speech, and everything he said is verifiable. And now the NAACP wants an apology????

Anonymous said...

It's just another attempt to blame someone, ANYONE other than the punks and thugs from taking responsibility for their own criminal behavior. Calling a spade a spade is politically incorect these days and will be our downfall as a civilized society. Unless we start to retaliate when confronted by murderers and rapists and send them packing in body bags we will continue to hear about this on the news on a regular basis. Wake up people...If you look like a victim rest assured one day YOU WILL BE!

Anonymous said...

the previous commenter obviously believes that the NAACP doesn't have the same right to free speech, which would include asking for an apology when they feel they are ofended. If the NAACP wants to hold a press conference about the color Blue, so what? The NAACP is irrelevant in this case, the Mayor's analysis of the situation, however laughable, is of great concern.

I'd be interested to see how you "verify" that everyone that has been arrested was a member of a gang. If it were so, the gang would have been infiltrated by now, and there would be no problem. American Gangsters wear suits, and have done so since the 20's. Chldren wear baggy clothes and sneakers.

In fact, and this IS verifiable, Anywhere in the world you go, gangsters are known because they are organized and well-dressed. The African American yong people that have been arrested are loosely affiliated with a street group that CMPD can't get a handle on. The city is claiming a "gang problem" based on graffiti on walls and 25 year old Black men wearing jean shorts when they are arrested on a 90 degree day. They are no more members of a gang than the people who are robbing banks across the Carolinas. If anything, they are all members of the same "gang" as the many many people with foreclosures on their properties in the Charlotte area...the desperately broke gang.

Mayor Pat's comments were right on the money. Statistics don't lie.
Stop ignoring the problem or it will get worse.

THE MAYOR SHOULDN'T HAVE MADE THOSE COMMENTS. THE COMMENTS WERE VERY STEROTYPICAL. WHAT IS DRESSING LIKE A GANGTER?? I WENT UPTOWN THAT NIGHT AND EVERYONE WAS DRESSED LIKE ME. JUST BECAUSE MANY BLACK PEOPLE HAVE THE SAME STYLE DOESN'T MEAN ITS "gangster." IF THE CROWD IS MAJORITY BLACK, OBVIOUSLTY MOST OF THE PEOPLE WHO GET ARRESTED WILL BE BLACK ALSO. AND MOST OF THE ARRESTS THAT OCCURED WAS NONSENSE. NO BIG DISRUPTIONS YET WE HAD 27 ARREST FOR disorderly conduct. THE ARREST THAT WERE MADE ON THE JULY 4TH AND THE MAYOR'S COMMENTS WAS NOTHING MORE THAN A modern day lyching. TAKE IT FROM SOMEONE LOOKING FROM THE INSIDE, NOT THE OUTSIDE.

Anonymous said...

I love how 8:27 makes victims out of the African American youth and points the finger at ITALIANS!

At least if the Italian gangs wore suits, they modeled themselves on respectable people. Black "gangster" youth model themselves on criminals.

Not to mention you have completely misconstrued the use of term gangster. We are not alleging that every black youth is the member of an organized gang, i.e. blood, Latin King. They are gangsters in the respect that they are fully invested in criminal activity.

I believe your attitude toward their behavior is more dangerous for society than their individual acts.

Anonymous said...

To the person who referred to the youths as the desperately broke crowd, I say to you that is partly correct, but more importantly they are part of the morally bankrupt crowd thanks to their parents. Most of these gang members (and yes gangs are in Charlotte and they are growing) come from parents who never get married or who are totally absent. When the parents actually are around they give great role modeling by being drug addicts or prostitutes. The NAACP would serve the black community better by demanding that blacks honor the institution of marriage, keep their families together, and raise their children with values of honesty, faith, and hard work. I am part of a ministry that goes to Western Youth Institution in Morganton for teen male felons, and I can tell you that I hear stories over and over and over of absent or poor parents who fail these children. The boys then fall in with gangs who become their family by default. Shame on the NAACP for not trying to uphold some standards for their own people that would actually point them in the right direction.

4:26 said ...AND MOST OF THE ARRESTS THAT OCCURED WAS NONSENSE. NO BIG DISRUPTIONS... well i would say that a ak47 was big to me..

Let's see, If I'm correct the NAACP includes the word "Colored". I thought that was politically incorrect. Why don't they change the organization's name to what it really is the ABW "Anyone but White". This is a disgrace that the President of the NAACP would ask for an apology. Where is Jessie Jackson and Al Sharpton when the NAACP need them? Mayor Pat McCrory was absolutely correct and other Charlotte leaders should step up and support him. We need to get Bill Cosby here in Charlotte to speak to the African American (LOL) community. He is the only black leader who appears to understand the real problem with black youths of today. My bet is not a single one of those so called African American youths are from Africa, any takers?????

TO 8:42 AM THE AK47 WAS FOUND IN THE TRUNK OF A CAR NO ONE WAS BEING HARMED, IF YOU ARE SCARED OF WHATS IN THE TRUNK OF SOMEONE'S CAR, YOU MIGHT WANT TO MOVE OUT OF CHARLOTTE. AND THATS ONLY ONE ARREST OUT OF 140+....NONSENSE.

Anonymous said...

To: IF THE CROWD IS MAJORITY BLACK, OBVIOUSLTY MOST OF THE PEOPLE WHO GET ARRESTED WILL BE BLACK ALSO. First, you don't have to use caps, we see you. Second nobody normal wants to go uptown anymore because crowds are black and hostile, you know that too. Everyone knows about the problem with urban blacks, but everyone is afraid. I am from formaer Soviet Union, same was there. Everyone knew communists were bad but everyone was afraid untill one day.
You better change your behaviour or there will be "one day" for you as well. Become civilized or you will be victims of your own behaviour soon!!!!

Anonymous said...

I hope McCrory will run for governor or president. It's so nice to finally see a politican that isn't concerned about being politically correct.

Anonymous said...

Ok here is the way I see it, you all tend to raise some good points, and I would just like to add to some of them. First of all there are gangs in Charlotte, we all know this. Are all youths who wear baggy clothes and of a certain age group a part of those gangs? No. We know this too. So let's get past the use of the word "gangs" or any variation of the word. I think we can agree on this, there are a lot, I didn't say all I said "a lot", of youth today who feel that it is cool or acceptable to be a "thug" or have a "thug" mentality. For the record, thug means "a person who uses violence or brutality". This needs to change, instead of showing them it is acceptable to act this way, punish them, hold them accountable for their actions. Stop trying to be politically correct and start trying to hold people accountable for their actions. Yes the NAACP can ask for an apology, shoot Mayor McCrory can ask for one from them as well. That is the nice thing about America we can ask for apologies. Does it mean we will always get it? No it doesn't. Shoot, I can ask for a million dollars, doesn't mean I will get it.Let's stop focusing on "he said, she said" and start focusing on the problem. People are not being held accountable for their actions and the youth of today are in serious need of good role models. Stop trying to make a buck and start trying to make a difference. Can we all agree on that?

Jon said...

First of all McCrory is making a blanket statement that the majority of people who imitate gangster activity are black, when in Charlotte there are a ton of white kids doing the same thing. Also who cares if someone dresses "gangster" this implies that if you dress that way you are also acting that way. This encourages discrimination. That is why the NAACP is asking for an apology. Again as I stated in another "news" post on this site, on the 4th I was drinking and being obnoxious in front of about 7 cops. There were actually quite a few of us doing illegal things in public but we were mainly white. Did any of us get arressted or ticketed?? No.

Also why do poloticians believe you can fix inner city crime by making blanket arrests? How about trying to give these people real jobs? I also love how almost all of you are posting anonymously.

Were you blocking traffic, carrying a weapon or anything illegal or just being a drunk idiot? As far as the AK47 goes its funny that this other guy thinks its OK because it was in the trunk. You should be glad its off the streets because I'm sure it wasn't intended to be used for target practice.

The NAACP continues to do a disservice to the African_American community by responding with such rediculous knee-jerk responses to anything close to constructive criticism.

Furthermore, the NAACP spokesman misrepresented McCrory's statement. The Mayor didn't characterize every Black youth as a gangster wannabe. He simply described those individuals who are semmingly often arrested at Uptown events.

The NAACP has become somewhat irrelevant in recent years. They won't take on the tough issues like teen pregnancy, fatherless homes and high dropout rates.

That difficult fight is left to people like Juan Williams, who spoke of the "Culture of Failure" that pervades the community in his talk in Charlotte last December.

The NAACP needs to re-tool itself, and move out of the 1970's victim culture.

Anonymous said...

Unfortunately, the NAACP is irrelevant to everyone but the black community, the one group it has influence over.

Only the black leaders will be able to turn this around. Where is Bill Cosby? Are there any athletes out there who can speak out against thug black culture? Can P. Diddy renounce his thug beginnings to show his culture the light?

Let's be honest, young black males are only interested in the music industry and sports. That is where the change needs to begin. The problem is that many of the professional athletes are as criminals themselves, but are good enough at sports to remove themselves from the influences of their culture.

Blacks need to take a lesson from other addicts in 12 step programs. Nothing will change until you recognize the problem.

Wow. Mayor Pat finally tells the truth about something and gets hammered for it! What a pity. And let's speak frankly here. African-Americans are too quick to see race as the issue any time they feel they've been "singled out." It's time for African-Americans to quit whining ("Boo hoo hoo, you're picking on us because we're black") playing the race card when it's not applicable, and address your problems with responsible leadership and parenting, rather than trying to blame the so-called "accuser." I personally don't care if these punks are white, black, or purple...keeping them from stirring up trouble should be law enforcement's priority...and in this case, it looks as if it worked. So bravo to the Charlotte police for a job well done!

Anonymous said...

The reason why the NAACP is upset is because his comments were pure stereotypes. Firstly, there is no dress code for gangsters so it was clear that he was talking mainly about the way black people dress. I do believe it is wrong to be a gangster and i am nothing close to it. It just hurts to know that because i wear baggy cloths Pat Mcrory thinks that i want to be a gangster.

Anonymous said...

I am a member of the black youth and i no desire of being a gangster. Why does our feel that i want to be a gangster because of the way that i dress. I didnt know gangters had a dress code

Anonymous said...

The average carjacker/bank robber/street robber is wearing baggy jeans or shorts and an oversized tshirt.

Why would you choose to dress like them? If all pedophiles wore purple sneakers, I would avoid wearing purple sneakers. If I see someone wearing purple sneakers, I would make an assumption about them. They are either a pedophile or want to be treated like one.

The question is why do you want to be treated as a thug?

Anonymous said...

It's simple. If you don't want to be mistaken for a thug, then don't dress like one.

Anonymous said...

so you are basically saying stereotyping is the right thing to do. I consider dont myself to dress like an average carjacker or a bank robber. Im dressed like an average person and bank robbers happen to dress like me. criminals dont have a dress code

Anonymous said...

You may be dressed like the average black person. If so, I suggest that is something to be taken up with your culture.

The extra baggy pants short and tshirt is the equivalent of a prison uniform as far as whites are concerned.

Anonymous said...

And AAAAAALLLLLLLLL females let out a collective sigh with me.

Poor 5:09 PM has just joined our world of being sterotyped from clohtes, haircolor, nailcolor, shaven or not, skirt length, clevage or not, high heels or not, tight pants or sweats, glasses, contacts, push up bra, bag worth a paycheck or not and it goes on & on.

Welcome to our world of being judged by appearance!!
I seriously doubt the arrest made on July 4th were due to dress but due to criminal behaviour. It just happens most everyone getting on the bus dressed the same and only had to be issued prison flipflops for it. Hawk

Anonymous said...

The criminals who play the gang role perpetuate the stereotype.

McCrory simply stated the facts: most of the youth involved in Uptown crime have a certain look.

Crime statistics (aka the the truth) can be a bitch!

Anonymous said...

it is not only african americans who wear that type of clothing. white males where that type of clothing too. its just that nobody bothers the white males. the police dont stop the white male that is walking down the street with the same baggy jeans and long shirt. I'm not saying McCory is wrong but McCory's statement should have been worded differently. a persons dress doesnt mean they are a criminal. a man could be in a polo shirt and dockers and be a rapist. Just as many white males have been arrested for crimes that are equal too or even more dangerous than ones that african american males have been arrested for. Its just that nobody publicizes the white males. the public likes to hide the fact that their are white gangsters too. it has nothing to do with race. a gangster is a gangster!

i am a young african american male living here in charlotte and i was a little taken back by the mayor's comments but for completly different reasons. my disbelief came from the fact that he felt that he had to say it. this speaks volumes about our community as african americans. i'm not saying that all young african americans who dress a certain way are bad seeds or are gangsters nor am i saying the mayor was entirely correct in the way he expressed himself but what i am saying is that one of our 'so called' african american leaders in this community should have said this long ago instead of asking the mayor for an apology for telling the truth. instead of 'shooting the messenger' as in this case, maybe we should look to police our own children and teach them some sense of self pride, self worth and most importantly self esteem. where are the african american community leaders to teach and to lead the youth to act like men and women. we point the angry finger at the mayor for telling the truth simply because he is white and said these things. when we point this finger we are effectively saying that we do not want to be told that we have to follow rules or assimilate within society and we will always use the crutch of racism to bleach the fact that we need to police our own whenever conveinent.dr king would turn over in his grave if he saw this. the naacp is always in the forefront reacting when they should be proactive in reaching out to the youth before events making the statement to conduct yourself as a young man/woman and use some common sense when you go out.we need to teach our children that it is not ok to disrespect any adult no matter race or creed. this is not a failure of the mayor, this is a failure as a community!!!we need to teach our children conflict resolution skills and the skill of diplomacy in order to preserve their own dignity and it wouldn't hurt for some parents to learn these skills, too. we forget in our angry tirades against the mayor and the police that sometimes these children don't conduct themselves properly and are sometimes the root of the problem but we enable them by standing behind this outlandish behavior and crying racism. here's some food for thought...take a look at the mug shots just on this website, a majority of these young men are wearing white tee shirts and are doing things that criminals do. there is a shread of truth in everything no matter how poorly it is said!

Hey CIC:

You won't get a coherent, logical argument from the people calling you a racist. You've simply gotten too close to the truth about crime in Charlotte. It's amazing that posting crime stats for all to see somehow makes a person a racist.

The use of the racist label by your detractors is the modern-day equivalent of calling someone with whom you disagreed in the 1950's a Communist.

It is meant to bring an end to discourse on any subject and send the accused running for cover.

Anonymous said...

It amazes me how people love to jump to conclusions and immediately assume racism. All the mayor was doing was simply stating the facts. It appears the majority of people arrested july 4th were black and apparently this is the way they were dressed. PERIOD!!!!! I'm so sick of people wanting to be the "victim". It seems to me that if you are an "african american" you would want to exert your energy towards saving your youth and not bashing anyone who simply states the truth. You don't see us "caucasians" ranting everytime someone refers to the white person who did this or that. If you want to do something about it, do it!! Help save your own people!!!!!!

Until ALL parents of ALL races take charge and begin to parent, we will have issues with kids going down the wrong road. I don't care what your race is. I was brought up poor and had bad breaks and experienced poverty. I have been discriminated against and have experienced racism personally. My parents, no matter how tough it was, never stopped being involved with me and set down discipline and parented me. They never permitted me to make excuses and never would allow me to wear or emulate anything connected to negative role models. As for Mayor McCrory, it took courage to say what he said. I am embarrassed, but he did speak the truth. And yes, it does hurt, doesn't it? PARENTS; stop making excuses and providing your kids with excuses that hurt them, not help them. Aren't you a PARENT? When are you going to become embarrassed? Your kids out there are always claiming they "Represent" Your sons and daughters reflect who YOU are in how they behave out in the world!! They 'Represent" YOU and YOUR family and values. Do you REALLY like what you see???

Every race has its issues & pain. But for me the crutch of racism in 2007, seeing & hearing so many successful blacks all around me, seems prehistoric. I will never comprehend why it is assumed racism is a one way street. Hawk

I agree with 4:38 am's statement.
"we point the angry finger at the mayor for telling the truth simply because he is white and said these things"
The black community appears to be more concerned about racism, and sneakers, then about anything else. I have lived in charlotte all my life and it has just gotten more segrated. Some of the black people here are racist. I do not trust them!! They will pretend to be your friend and then steal your purse- because you are white and they think you are an easy target.
They teach their kids that all white people are racist and that its OK to pick on them at school because there great, great, great grandparents owned slaves. (what about the white immigrants)
Then the black teachers think that all the white kids are racist because they won't sit beside the other black students because they pick on them.
I know it is just a small percentage of black people that do these things, but because the other black people allow it and won't condemn them for it, I don't trust any of them. It's not racism, I feel sorry for them I don't hate them. I would like to help the children, teens, and elderly having to live in these poor crime infested areas but I know, because I am white, I will be a target. I just wish the black teachers and leaders in the community would speak up and teach about tolerance, self-discipline, and values. They should condemn these rap lyrics that glorify selling drugs, stealing, lying to women then getting them pregnant, ect.. Until then, most of the crime being committed in this city will be performed by black people while the black community as a whole looks the other way.
I won't interfere, I know, based on the way they treat me, I do not belong in black areas nor should I get involved in black issues. I will never raise children in this city maybe not even in this racist country for that matter.

Anonymous said...

I agree with the Mayor, but I do not think that the parents or the kids understand! Send them to LA (Cali) and when one of these kids from the south who are "Just dressing this way" gets killed because of the way they are dressed, then see how we all change our tune then! Maybe MCroy is saving a life! I seen this on the west and it will happen here before too long because we try to be "thugs" or whatever. I know it's not just the black kids, wich the Mayor pointed out and he stated a fact it was the majority of African Americans that night! And can someone please tell me where he labeled all African Americans like the one arrested that night? HE DID NOT!
There are a lot more issues you have in Charlotte than this, and for the NAACP TAKE A HIKE!!!!!!!!!

Charlotte Newbie said...

I am a black professional who relocated here from Cincinnati, Ohio, "The Queen City" of the Midwest. Trust me – Charlotte is on the right path in terms of overcoming the issues. On the other hand, Cincinnati has an anti-black culture although 40-45% percent of its citizens are black. At least one young black person (usually male) is killed a day. The Cincinnati media enjoys keeping count of what they describe as "black-on-black crime." The media also enjoys reporting any rowdy behavior in the black community. When a “gang” of black youth (about 15-20) decided to go wild at the annual Black Family Reunion, the media had fun reporting on the “Dysfunctional” Black Family Reunion, although 99.9% of the black attendees (in the 1000’s) were upstanding. Cincinnati in recent years has also dealt with police killings black men. Despite cover ups - many of the killings were proven to be unjustified. Remember the "riot" a few years ago? Last but not least - Cincinnati is one of a few cities in the last decade that allowed the KKK or other hate groups to march on its public square. In 2007, the city issued a permit to a hate group that was rescinded when the public cried foul. Basically, Cincinnati government (including the police organization) and media have demonstrated an anti-black agenda. Even worse – the black community is being ruined by its growing minority of people with “gangster” and “unintelligent” mentalities. Others are pointing at the big pink elephant in the room – right or wrong – but the black community has not effectively dealt with the growing cancer.

I understand the problem. It is what Barack Obama describes as a “quiet riot.” This society has created a culture of people who are bankrupt socially, economically, and morally. Not just Blacks have been impacted. And racism and class are at the core. These people feel hopeless and many would easily be diagnosed as clinically depressed. Unfortunately, many have turned to drugs, alcohol, and promiscuity – not education - to cope (which has led to “motherless” and “fatherless” generations). The truth is that too many of our youth are emulating poor behavior (through their dress and actions). To focus on gang affiliation or not is to miss the point.

Truthfully, the cancer that is growing in the black community (and society as a whole) is foreign to Blacks. Regardless of what you feel about Blacks, most of us are decent people and lawlessness does not come natural to us. Our ancestors (from the time of slavery) were dignified survivors. Nonetheless, once we start separating ourselves from the cancerous behavior, we can start healing our community. We must demand society’s cooperation since the root of the cancer is a societal problem (i.e., racism). So the dialogue between the mayor and NAACP is great. Unless they want Charlotte to become the next Queen City in ruin like Cincinnati, they must admit that there is a problem first and then work together to fix it.

Side note: I bet neither the NAACP leaders (and their members) nor the mayor (and his administration) live near (or associate with) people with the cancerous behavior. I don’t blame them. Who wants to be bothered with poor behavior? If they work together, they can bring relief to our poor seniors and other innocent victims stuck in the “gangster” matrix with emulators.

AS an african american woman- I totally agree with MAyor McCrory. He did not make assumptions he simply called it what it was. Until we as a people stop looking at ourselves as perpetual victims of "the system", we will always be the ceter of drama. i dont blame many white people for thinking what they do but as for me, my husband and my kids, we are going to continue on the path that was taught to us by OUR parents, "work hard, do the right thing and keep your nose clean". I'm blessed to say that I have never been exposed to or known someone who has been arrested or in jail. My parents made sure to keep me & my brothers around upwardly mobile people- not jsut blacks. I look at the black kids today and shake my head in shame-- Hell, even I'm afraid of them and I'm black too! I can guarantee you that 90% of the kids who were arrested either: came from single parent homes, their mothers are no more than 17 years older than them, they have little or no chance of being college bound and probably have never known anyone in their families to be successful.
It is not a "race" issue like so many people think , it's a BLACK issue. Until we stop blaming everyone but ourselves, we will continue to be looked upon (as a whole) as the bottom of the barrel.

Its ourtrageous to assert that current fashion trends are related to gang membership. As relates to gangs Charlotte has not been able to deal with the gang problem. A problem whose growth comprises primarily spanish speaking and Asian gangs. Charlotte like other cities have failed to successfully identify and implement strategies to address the gang issue according to experts. The linked reported specifically addresses Charlotte NC's reported gang statistics and so called gang problem.

http://www.justicepolicy.org//reports_jl/7-10-07_gangs/press_release.htm

The problem with the Mayors comments is that estimates indicate that of the 180 billion industry, 86 billion in sales will be for urban wear fashions. I hardly think that only African Americans are purchasing these fashions. So the issue is that gang members and non gang members alike dress according to the fashions of their times. Hardly an acceptable justification to associate that population with potential gang members.
Mayor McCrory's is the mayor of Charlotte and therefore responsible for thee types of misstatements no matter whose feeding him the statistics or exasperated conversations.
