What do you think about this......Last night an officer was behind a vehicle. He checked the license plate number and the car was stolen. Make a long story short, he put the blue lights on and the car refused to stop. Based on CMPD's weak chase policy, the officer had to turn his lights off and let the car go. We all know that stolen vehicles are a pre-text to other crimes, robberies etc. By the way it was around 1 am, not exactly rush hour traffic. Do yuo think CMPD should be able to chase?

Police should be allowed to chase unless the safety of others is at risk! CMPD's chase police is a joke. I think it was Tara Servatius who wrote about this issue recently??

Police should absolutely NOT be able to chase.

Los Angeles is a prime example of car pursuits gone awry. They have to pay millions to injured bystanders in order to stop thieves stealing cars. The numbers don't crunch.

If someone presents an IMMINENT threat to the safety of others, then by all means chase them around. But even bank robbers are not worth chasing. This isn't 1850 in Texas and our horse has been stolen. We have insurance to cover property and cash losses. Nothing replaces a lost life.

Excellent work you've done on yet another sore spot in North Carolina. Not just Charlotte, but all over the state.

Keep on keeping on. You do what you do very well.

Im not a big fan of the very basis of the hypothetical question. I dont mean whether to chase or not but whether a cop would be randomly running license plates at stoplights when there is no reasonable suspicion of the driver having committed any crime. Its an invasion of privacy and an abuse of power for cops to randomly have access to all of your government personal information on a whim. If I do something wrong, by all means run my plates, but if I have not done anything wrong (or at least as far as the cop knows), keep your nose out of my personal info. Any other reason is a simple invasion of privacy and a cop fishing for a violation.

Scott v. Harris: Broadly shielding police from liability for injuries that occur when police chase and ram into a speeding motorist, if the motorist's own actions had threatened innocent bystanders

I agree CMPD policy is lax but it also means the officer goes home at the end of shift and the crime fighting can be done at another time.

okay, the guy who said running your plate at a red light is an invasion of your privacy.....that is about the dumbest thing I have ever heard. I mean, do you want the cops to try and catch people breaking the law? Here is an example, criminals often steal license plates off of cars, put it on their's and go commit a crime, such as breaking into cars. Now, the cop is behind that car at a red light (not knowing they have been breaking into cars), runs the tag and notices it is not on the correct car. Initiates a traffic stop and is able to recover some stolen property. What you are saying is that is wrong because there was no reasonable suspicion to run the plate in teh first place? If that is the case, then why enter warrant information based on license plate information? Did you know that if you have a felony warrant, and a cop runs the tag, that it will tell them that you have a warrant? But wait, running your tag is an invasion of privacy. So I'm sorry, and I wish I could be polite about this, but, you are an idiot. Part of the bleeding heart problem. Looking for any reason to protect the poor criminals.

If a guy who steals a car, or robs a bank, and runs from the cops, crashes his car and dies, is it really the cops fault? Chase when ut is safe for the officer and the public. Officers drive for a living, and sometimes under stress. Give them some room on when to chase. 130 am on a tuesday on south blvd....goooooooddddd....300pm in a school zone baaaaaadddddd......We get it.

95% of these robberies were at gunpoint. Interesting stat.

Can you please relate to us the racial makeup of the suspects as reported?

I'm just curious.

I am discouraged to read of these robberies in Charlotte because when it is a very young teenager and they are caught, I know that I may end up meeting them at Western Youth Institution i Morganton, NC where many teen felons are sent. I participate in a prison ministry there where we try to help these boys learn that there is a different way to live that is the opposite of gang life. But they have been brainwashed into gang life so early that it is hard for them to escape it. The black men who have fathered these children and then abandoned them has the blood of all these crimes on their hands. The black community needs to step up and call out their men and women who are having children out of wedlock and then abandoning them to the gang life.

Im sorry you think Im an idiot for valuing my privacy. I still firmly stand by what I said. What about the other 99% of plates that get run and check out? No one thinks about it because *they dont know* some cop is sitting behind them at a stoplight with their name, address, social security number, criminal/driving history, insurance information, and god only knows what else sitting on his computer screen. You are free to enjoy having your privacy invaded for no reason but I dont like it.

How is running your license plate an invasion of your privacy? Driving is considered a privledge. I highly doubt cops can see all your info on the computer screen. Cops DO have to abide by privacy laws but running your plate isnt one of them.

Driving is a property right, not a privilege. It cannot be taken away without due process of law.

There is no expectation of privacy in your license plate. The state owns the plate and the state owns the number.

with all the armed robberies, violent crimes that have been happening in the last few months, all you want to freaking worry about is your privacy being invaded, by running your plate-
give me a break!!!!!!!!

AMEN!!

Your social security number is not shown when I run your tag. Neither is your criminal history. Your driving history is, which may be helpful because you are indeed driving. If you are that paranoid, maybe you should move to the mountains and start a militia or something. I am sorry, but you are still an idiot.

Guess what else, 75% of the tags I run are Hondas because they get stolen the most. So now I am invading someones privacy because they are driving a Honda which must mean I am profiling as well.

Thought about it some more, and..............................................you are still an idiot.

Figures, its a cop calling me an idiot for wishing for my privacy to remain intact. You just proved yourself to be the idiot with your statement. An unprofessional idiot with a gun and a badge. Then again I guess thats par for the course in this police state of a country. Your attitude is whats wrong with the police these days. You dont actually give a rat's ass about anything but promotions (GOTTA MEET THOSE NUMBERS!!) and the paycheck boosts that comes with them. You obviously dont care about anything else. If you (collectively) did, there wouldnt be a banner about 58 robberies in 3 days on the home page.

10:35 PM...youre an idiot! You are free to leave our "police state of a country" at anytime.
On one hand you dont want tags ran and the other you blame LE for the 58 banners. Not only are you talking outta both sides of your mouth, but outta your ass too! Hawk

Anonymous said...

No, I'm calling you an idiot because you are an indeed an idiot. As far as promotions go, not me, I am a police officer, not a supervisor desk jockey, and I don't want to be. What do you mean byb numbers? Tickets? Arrests? Common myth if you are talking about quotas. I give a crap about my numbers. I work my tail off. I don't say "OH NO, I NEED TO UP MY NUMBERS" Police state of a country? Wow. If we were living in a police state, crime would go down. Unprofessional with a gun and a badge blah blah blah abuse of power blah blah blah. You are going to have to do better than that. When I talk to a 16 year old 9 Tre Blood gang member I call him sir, just like the 45 year old banker. I treat them both with respect. You can knock the police all you want about the 58 robberies. You probably don't have a clue how hard they are to solve. Believe me, we are trying to figure out better strategies, but nothing is full proof. It is just as frustrating to us. So, keep knocking us from the comfort of your lazy boy, or the stinky couch in your moms basement. Or, better yet, sign up for a ride along and see for yourself how difficult this job is (and fun), or continue to play monday morning quarterback. Are you one of the people that complains when the you see a ploice car driving to fast then turn around and complain when they don't get to your house at light speed?

You are obviously in the minority when it comes to this license plate thing, so it is pretty much a non-issue. So feel free to ask me any question you want. I will give you a straight answer. Might not like the answer you get, but it will be straight forward, with a bit of smart ass cop with a sense of humor mixed in.

The majority of the citizens that I have come across in Charlotte are good people. Only takes a few though. Y'all have a good night!!!!!!!!

By the way, don't be offended because I called you an idiot. That is kind of weak compared to what I get called. So just run with it. Get some thicker skin.

Ha, police state.........toooooo funnnnyyyyy

ONCRIME, keep up the good work.

Oh, the paycheck sucks, and the raises are crap. Don't do it for the money. Yeah yeah yeah you pay my salary because you pay taxes. Well, you are paying me to invade your privacy....woo, hurts doesn't it. Wait, I pay taxes too, ouch......raose taxes!!!!!!!!! HAHA (Evil sinister cop laugh)
