Residents Help Police Arrest 3 Burglary Suspects
On Saturday morning, the CMPD's South Division Captain Golding sent the following e-mail alert: (Click here to subscribe to CMPD crime alerts)
Shortly after noon on Friday, residents helped police arrest three suspects during a burglary in progress on Sulkirk Road, located in the Beverly Woods neighborhood near Sharon Rd & Park Rd South.
A neighbor reported observing a white Mercury Grand Marquis occupied by three black males driving in the community. The neighbor further observed the vehicle drop off two suspects. The neighbor was able to get the tag number and called 911. A motorist on Sulkirk observed the two suspects walking down the victim’s driveway and also called 911.
The suspects went to the victim’s side door, broke the glass and wooden frame of the door and entered the residence. The suspects then began gathering items of value from inside. Meanwhile, the victim arrived home. After opening the front door and seeing her property disturbed, she went back out the street and met with one of the 911 callers.
The suspects were attempting to flee the residence when officers arrived. One suspect ran in to woods behind the residence and the second suspect went back inside. Officers surrounded the residence and requested a K-9 unit. When the K-9 unit arrived, the residence was entered and the suspect surrendered without incident.
Other officers stopped the suspect vehicle which had been circulating in the area. The driver was arrested and suspected stolen property from other burglaries was recovered from the vehicle. The police helicopter and the K-9 unit attempted to locate the third suspect that had ran into the woods behind the residence. We were unable to locate the suspect at that time.
However, approximately 45 minutes later, an alert citizen spotted the third suspect walking in the neighborhood and called 911. Several South Division and Providence Division officers responded back to the area. With the help of 911 callers and several citizens standing outside, the suspect was finally located by the K-9 unit hiding under the deck of a house at the end of Fairheath Drive.
All three suspects were charged with burglary. There may be more charges if we are able to link any of the other property found in the suspect vehicle with other burglaries.
Special thanks to the citizens who assisted us with this apprehension. This is a prime example of the benefits of establishing Neighborhood Watches.
As always, thanks for your support.

I wonder how the new Chief is going to explain this one?

Typical criminal free for all in charlotte. What was yours now belongs to someone else. Citizens made the difference this time.
Now, put these sorry, no good for nothing, thugs in jail and leave them there for 20 years like the Burglary penalty allows. You will not have to worry about coming home and finding your Mother, Wife, child, murdered in your own home. Wake up folks, let your anger be heard by the Politicians and Judges that you voted for that are allowing this to happen, over and over and over.
The scum were: Randy Sims, Demontrez Dobie, and Chason Brereton. Dobie is 17 and has been arrested 8 times since January 2007. Sims has 2 arrests in the last two months and this is Brereton's first, but probably not last, arrest. Way to go Chason!
Here's a perfect way to kick off the fight against crime. Assign them defenders, raise their bail to $1 million, do the necessary research and set trial for August 1, 2008. Once convicted, have the court sentence them to 20 years apiece in State Prison. Then, and this is critical, advertise this fact all over Mecklenburg County so the young punks can see exactly what will befall THEM should they opt this course for their lives. Draconian--yes--will it work--you betcha it will.
All this work probably for nothing. They will be back soon.
I live about a block away from Sulkirk. I stopped home for lunch Friday afternoon and on my way back to work, about 8 squad cars were heading north on South Park Drive with their lights and sirens on, then all of the sudden they all did 3-point turns and headed south (back towards Sulkirk). Kind of made me laugh, but I'm glad they caught the person. This is the only site that I've found online that mentioned this story.
I had been debating on whether to buy a handgun for home protection. Since this happened so close to home, my mind has been made up.
explain what? The crime will be reduced to lesser charges and these guys will be back on the street in time for memorial weekend vacations when good folks are gone and homes are available for these thugs to visit once again.
This web site needs a followup section so we can see that these guys in fact are not doing time for their crimes.
Anon 11:11 do NOT buy a handgun for home defense!!!! get a 12 gauge pump and load it with #1 or #0 buckshot. Home defense is a high tension situation and a handgun is NOT the best choice. Shoot for center of body mass.
Great work Neighborhood ! Gotta stick together like the thugs do ! Now check online everyday to make sure they are still in jail. Go to the bond hearings and speak up against repeat offenders !
We have to unite and get rid of all the scums of this city.
I love it when neighbors watching out for each other pays off this way!!
A CMPD detective I know once told me that a person's first instincts are usually right.
Kudos to the person who thought something didn't look right and called in CMPD.
