7 Charlotte Residents File Lawsuit Against CMPD

charlotte-police-fatal-shootingA federal lawsuit was filed against CMPD by seven Charlotte residents for the ruse of smoke bombs and tear gas during the protests over the fatal police shooting of Keith Lamont Scott on Sept. 20.

The residents are asking for a temporary restraining order so officers won’t be able to use force against protests during nonviolent protests in the future.

The residents said on Friday that they filed the lawsuit after CMPD didn’t answer a letter they sent Tuesday requesting police commit voluntarily to what they are asking for.

The residents said late Friday that their lawyers heard from lawyers for the city on Friday morning and it was determined by an exchange that there could be no voluntary agreement reached that would work for both sides. After that is when the lawsuit was filed.

Lawyers from the Charlotte law firm Tin Fulton Walker & Owen and the Southern Coalition for Social Justice, N.C. Central University’s Civil Litigation Clinic filed the complaint.
