Police in Gaston County were led on a high-speed chase toward Mecklenburg County after a carjacking that took place Thursday morning.
Shortly before 10:00, the suspect assaulted a 70 year-old man that was sitting in his pickup truck at Eastridge Westfield Mall. After beating the victim until he gave up his keys, the suspect took his truck and headed North on I-85.
Shortly after, police were in pursuit at speeds exceeding 100 mph. According to the authorities, the suspect was involved in a wreck with another vehicle that caused slight injuries before hitting a stop sign. Following the accident, the suspect was arrested and identified as 17-year-old Tommy McCray.
Dallas Rescue Squad responded to the carjacking call and worked to treat the victim’s injuries in the parking lot of the mall.
McCray faces a slew of charges for the carjacking and pursuit.
