82-Year-Old Hit By Vehicle In Middle of School Crosswalk

car crashAn elderly crossing guard for Cornelius Elementary School who was hit by a vehicle outside of the school in the middle of a crosswalk Thursday is expected to be okay, according to police.

Robert Jarosz, 82, was struck in the 21000 block of Catawba Avenue by a vehicle traveling east, police said.

Jarosz was holding a stop sign and wearing a reflective vest that was bright green when he was hit by the front end and front bumper of the vehicle.

The crossing guard was taken to Carolinas Medical Center, police said. He will stay there over the weekend to allow medical staff to watch his injuries.

The driver of the vehicle that hit Jarosz was 78-year-old Larry Matthews of Cornelius who police said didn’t realize he had hit someone or didn’t see Jarosz. Matthews had not been traveling over the 20-mph speed limit in that area.

Matthews received citation for failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk and failing to reduce speed to avoid collision with a pedestrian.

Police said Jarosz has been a civilian employee part-time as a crossing guard for the school with the Cornelius Police Department since May 2011. He plans to retire from the position at the end of June.
