Hickory, N.C. Ranked One of the ‘Most Miserable’ U.S. Cities

lenoirAn area close to Charlotte was ranked as one of ten of the most miserable U.S. cities, according to a Gallup-Healthways survey that was released Monday.

The results came from surveying Americans from 2012 to 2013 in 189 metropolitan U.S. areas. Hundreds of thousands of people were surveyed to record their emotional and physical health and status in regards to employment, social, and financial aspects, along with others.

According to the survey, the area of Hickory-Lenoir-Morganton is the fifth most miserable U.S. city, saying about 51% of Hickory area residents were deemed to be struggling.

The percentage was based on residents’ self-evaluations of both their lives currently and the state of their optimism for the future.

Hickory area residents’ optimism about the future was less than all of the other cities except seven, according to the survey results.

Almost nationwide, around 19% of the people surveyed said they lacked the energy to keep up with requirements of daily life in the last 24 hours.

77.4% of residents in the area claimed to have not been sad in the last 24 hours, which was some of the lowest rates in America.

Also among the lowest in the country was the median household income for Hickory, which in 2012 was $37,364.

The Gallup-Healthways survey showed those in the most miserable cities were more likely to have unhealthy behaviors and not be in physically good health. The residents in these cities were also more likely to be smokers than others in the nation.
