17-Year-Old Girl Killed in Boating Accident Over July 4th Weekend

boatingax_1A boating accident that occurred on Lake Norman, close to Mooresville, Saturday night resulted in the death of a 17-year-old girl, police said.

According to the North Carolina Wildlife Resource Commission, the girl had been on a kneeboard in the water when she was hit by a pontoon from behind and run over.

At the family’s request, the girl’s name has not been released by police.

The boat driver, whose name has not been released, had been drinking and was arrested and charged with boating while impaired. The driver could face more charges after the case is looked at by the district attorney.

Officials warn people to be extra cautious on the water over holiday weekends when it’s more likely others will be drinking.
