Homicides Increased for 2015 In Charlotte-Mecklenburg

cmpdLike other areas, Charlotte-Mecklenburg has seen a sharp rise in the amount of homicides in 2015 so far.

The city has seen a homicide increase of 40 percent, at 28 this year versus 20 last year at this same time. Crimes that were reported from January until June of this year have increase in most categories compared to the same span in 2014.

There were 42 homicides investigated by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police last year, which is the lowest recorded number since 1977 when police started tracking uniform crime statistics.

The drop in homicides was due to an increase in arresting and prosecuting the most violent criminals in the city, according to prosecutors and police.

According to criminologists, killings have been declining in both the United States and most other parts of the world in the last decade.

This year, robberies went down nearly 1.3 percent while burglaries have gone up 8.3 percent. Vehicle thefts increased over 31 percent since 2014.
