Inmate Attacked, Bit York County Detention Center Deputy

getMugAn inmate at the York County Detention Center has been charged with assault and battery after he bit and punched a deputy, records show.

Police charged 55-year-old Ira Dewitt Hayes, of New Street, with third-degree assault and battery, the York County Sheriff’s Office said.

Hayes was being escorted to his cell for threatening to fight an officer and yelling when he became aggressive towards an officer and charged at her, grabbing her hands, according to the report.

The officer placed Hayes on the floor, then he hit her mouth using his handcuffs and bit her arm, police said.

The deputy was given a tetanus shot at Riverview Medical Center.

Hayes had been incarcerated already for malicious injury to property, threatening the life of a public official, and several assault charges. He is jailed on bond set at $102,185.
