Mother Left 2 Young Children Alone in Home to Get Food

unnamedPolice have charged a Clover mother with child abuse for leaving her 3-year-old and 7-year-old at home alone while she left to get food.

Shaneka McDowell, 26, of Flat Rock Street, has been charged with two counts of unlawful conduct toward a child, a report from the Clover Police Department shows. According to jail records, McDowell was released from the Moss Justice Center on a $5,000 bond.

A family member told police on Sunday that the 3-year-old child had been left at McDowell’s Flat Rock Street home alone, according to a police report. The child had told McDowell’s family member across the street that her brother has still asleep and her mom wasn’t home.

The child had urinated on herself, police said.

When officers entered the unlocked door of the home, they found the other child, a 7-year-old boy, in bed asleep. Police then called the S.C. Department of Social Services.

While police were there, McDowell returned and said she had gone to get food from Hardee’s and was only been gone 20 minutes.

The children were placed in the family member’s custody.
