CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A search warrant is revealing new details behind the deadly drug overdose of a 9-month-old Charlotte baby.

Officers were called to a home along the 9500 block of Lina Ardrey Lane around 6:50 a.m. on July 22 to the report of an unresponsive child who was in cardiac arrest.

Nine-month-old Kaleb Lowery was rushed to Carolinas Medical Center-Pineville where he was pronounced deceased by hospital staff.

According to an autopsy report by the Medical Examiner’s Office, Kaleb died as a result of an overdose of two separate drugs.

Investigators found “two lethal doses” of medication in his system, a search warrant from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department released on Wednesday stated.

Toxicology reports show those drugs were Amitriptyline, a depression medication, and Diphenhydramine, more commonly known as Benadryl.

Warrants show the Amitriptyline was prescribed to 49-year-old Charlene Workman, Kaleb’s grandmother. Records show that Kaleb lived with Workman and was his legal guardian.

Workman was arrested last week and charged with involuntary manslaughter. She was initially denied bond, but was released from prison on Friday.

Neighbors say Workman still cares for her other grandchildren, as well.
