Belmont Woman Charged in Lowell Man’s Stabbing Death

ar-161017794A Belmont woman is facing a charge for first-degree murder in the death of a Lowell man found on the kitchen floor of his apartment Saturday morning.

According to family, Iva Dawn Helms, of 1112 Carson St., had known the victim, 61-year-old James William “Jimmy” Dellinger, since she was a young girl, according to family.

Helms had previously lived at the 700 Perkins St. home where Dellinger lived and had been staying there for several days, police said. Helms had called police on Saturday at 10:16 a.m. after she said she found him dead with a knife wound in the home.

Dellinger’s daughter, Angel Heath of Bessemer City, said Dellinger had been trying to help Helms and didn’t know why she would kill him. Helms and Dellinger had met when Helms was a teenager. According to Health, Dellinger helped Helms in any way he could, including bailing her out of jail and letting her stay with him when she had nowhere else to go.

Helms was booked without bond into the Gaston County Jail on Wednesday afternoon. She is charged with first-degree murder. This is the fifth time she’s been held at Gaston County Jail since November of 2014.
