After committing a string of crimes, 27 year-old John Eric Stamey was arrested when he crashed the stolen car he was driving.

Stamey had been reported police earlier, when a woman in the Jetton Cove neighborhood found an unknown man in her garage. Stamey left the woman’s garage when he was approached, but took the woman’s purse and cell phone as he left. Search teams, along with Davidson police and and Mooresville’s K-9 Unit looked for Stamey, but he could not be found.

On Thursday, Stamey stole a vehicle from Southport Drive in Cornelius and wrecked it in Charlotte on Perkins Drive. Reports for the crash and the stolen vehicle were called within minutes of each other. After the crash, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police were able to identify the vehicle as stolen and Stamey was taken into custody.

After Stamey was behind bars, police connected him to several car break-ins around the  area. In total, Stamey racked up 17 felony charges related to the car break-ins, car theft, and burglary. He is being jailed in Mecklenburg County
