CMPD Chooses Not to Renew ShotSpotter Contract

CIC Default CrimeCharlotte-Mecklenburg police announced in a news release that the department will not be renewing their $160,000 contract with the crime-detection system ShotSpotter.

CMPD said the system worked property but they felt there was not enough return on investment to renew the contract. According to the release, the department was not as successful as they’d hoped in identifying, arresting, and prosecuting those who illegally discharged firearms.

Police believe the funds can be better used on other crime-reduction processes like street-level crime cameras, body cameras and Real Time Crime Center technology.
