CMPD Investigating High School Student Fight Involving Officer

CIC Default CrimeCharlotte-Mecklenburg police have been investigating a fight that happened at Harding High School between six students and ended up involving a CMPD officer.

Officer J. Flowers had responded to the fight at the school on Thursday about 11 a.m. When Flowers attempted to break up the students, a 15-year-old who was involved in the fight tackled Flowers to the ground, police said.

After getting up, Flowers had to use physical force to restrain and handcuff the student, according to police.

The 15-year-old has been arrested and charged with simple assault, assault on a police officer, and resisting arrest. Police said they also found brass knuckles on the student, resulting in an additional weapons charge. He was transported to a juvenile detention facility.

The student’s name is not being released because of his age.

CMPD said they are currently investigating the situation through their Internal Affairs Division to ensure Flowers properly followed procedures.
