CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer Randall Kerrick fired his gun 12 times during an encounter with an unarmed 24-year-old man early Saturday, hitting the man 10 times, according to a police department spokeswoman
Jonathan Ferrell is a former Florida A&M football player who was shot and killed by officer Kerrick while seeking help after a car accident early Saturday morning.
Police said Monday afternoon their investigation thus far revealed 12 shots were fired by officer Kerrick, 10 of which struck Ferrell.
Authorities continued that their investigation has shown Officer Kerrick did not have “a lawful right to discharge his weapon during this encounter.”
Police believe Ferrell wrecked his car on Reedy Creek Road around 2:30 a.m. Saturday, then banged on the door of a nearby home for help. The woman in the home called police to report a man was trying to break in.
Police encountered Ferrell about a block away from the home, and one officer shot and killed Ferrell during the encounter. Police said Ferrell was running towards officers.
Saturday evening, police charged officer Kerrick with voluntary manslaughter for the shooting. He bonded out of custody by late Saturday night.
“The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department reiterates that this is a very unfortunate incident and it has devastated a family as well as caused a great deal of sadness and anxiety in our organization,” CMPD spokeswoman Jessica Wallin said in a statement.
