DA’s Office: Habitual Felon Team Sends 29 to Prison

The District Attorney’s Habitual Felon Team convicted thirty-three defendants this month in administrative courtroom 5350. Twenty-nine were sent to prison. The defendants entered guilty pleas in Mecklenburg County Superior Court before The Honorable Richard D. Boner, Superior Court Judge, and The Honorable Yvonne Mims Evans, Superior Court Judge, on Tuesday, October 2, Wednesday, October 3 and Friday, October 5, 2012.

Among those convicted were:

Nathaniel Berry, 34, pled guilty to 1) two counts of felony breaking or entering, 2) felony larceny after breaking or entering, 3) felony larceny and 4) being a habitual felon. Berry was
sentenced to 103-136 months in prison. Berry’s prior convictions include common law
robbery, felony breaking or entering and three counts of possession of cocaine with intent to
sell or deliver.

Willie Brock, 50, pled guilty to 1) identity theft and 2) driving while impaired. Brock was
sentenced to24-29 months in prison. Brock’s prior convictions include larceny of a vehicle
and two convictions for driving while impaired.

Michael Camp, 36, pled guilty to 1) four counts of felony breaking or entering and 2) being a
habitual felon. Camp was sentenced to 72-99 months in prison. Some of Camp’s prior
convictions include felony breaking or entering, felony larceny of motor vehicle and common law robbery.

Marcus Cochran, 29, pled guilty to 1) possession of cocaine with intent to sell or deliver and 2) being a habitual felon. Cochran was sentenced to 44-65 months in prison. Cochran has prior convictions that include possession of a stolen motor vehicle, sale of cocaine and possession of cocaine with intent to sell or deliver.

Wilson Derr, 47, pled guilty to 1) felony breaking or entering, 2) felony larceny of a motor
vehicle and 3) being a habitual felon. Derr was sentenced to 76-101 months in prison. Derr
has prior convictions that include over twenty counts of felony breaking or entering, over thirty counts of larceny after breaking or entering and several convictions for second degree
burglary.

Donald Dorest, 46, pled guilty to 1) possession cocaine and 2) being a habitual felon. Dorest
was sentenced to 30-48 months in prison. Dorest has prior convictions that include four counts of common law robbery and two counts of attempted common law robbery.

Hubert Helms, 54, pled guilty to 1) felony breaking or entering, 2) felony larceny after
breaking or entering and 3) being a habitual felon. Helms was sentenced to 67-93 months in
prison. Helms has prior convictions that include felony breaking or entering and felony
larceny.

Jonjulo Johnson, 44, pled guilty to 1) two counts of selling heroin, 2) sale of cocaine and 3)
being a habitual felon. Johnson was sentenced to 76-100 months on prison. Some of
Johnson’s prior convictions include trafficking cocaine, sale of cocaine and possession of a
firearm by a convicted felon.

Anthony Little, 47, pled guilty to 1) common law robbery and 2) felony larceny from the
person. Little was sentenced to 45-72 months in prison. Little has prior convictions that
include common law robbery and felony breaking or entering.

Jalane McManus, 34, pled guilty to 1) second degree burglary and 2) felony larceny after
breaking or entering. McManus was sentenced to 38-46 months in prison. McManus has prior convictions that include felony breaking or entering, felony larceny and felony possession of stolen goods.

Travis Meeks, 30, pled guilty to 1) possession cocaine and 2) being a habitual felon. Meeks
was sentenced to 20-36 months in prison. Meeks’ prior convictions include possession of
cocaine, possession of cocaine with intent to sell or deliver, and sale of cocaine.

Maurice Rakestraw, 22, pled guilty to 1) felony larceny from the person and 2) possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Rakestraw was sentenced to 27-42 months in prison. Some of
Rakestraw’s prior convictions include felony breaking or entering, possession of a stolen motor vehicle, and larceny after breaking or entering.

Clyde Reese, 53, pled guilty to 1) two counts of felony breaking or entering a motor vehicle
and 2) being a habitual felon. Reese was sentenced to 45-66 months in prison. Reese has prior convictions that include felony breaking or entering a motor vehicle, felony breaking or entering, and robbery.

Ricky Wingate, 35, pled guilty to 1) two counts of felony breaking or entering, 2) felony
larceny after breaking or entering and 3) being a habitual felon. Wingate was sentenced to 77-105 months in prison. Wingate’s prior convictions include felony breaking or entering,
possession of a stolen vehicle and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Albert Young, 61, pled guilty to 1) felony breaking or entering and 2) felony larceny after
breaking or entering. Young was sentenced to 36-53 months in prison. Some of Young’s prior convictions include felony breaking or entering, felony larceny and second degree burglary.

Note: Almost all guilty pleas entered in criminal administrative court are the result of an agreed upon plea arrangement between the State and the defendant, which is then approved by the sentencing judge.
