Detectives Investigate a Homicide in the Independence Division

Case Update: On Monday, August 17, 2009, CMPD Homicide detectives arrested Wesley Orion Woodling for the murder of Joseph D. Muse.

Mr. Woodling was interviewed by Homicide detectives at Police Headquarters and then transported to the Mecklenburg County Jail. He remains in custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Homicide and ADW Detectives are conducting a homicide investigation at 5914 Monroe RD., in the Independence Division. The victim has been identified as Joseph D. Muse.

At 7:34 p.m., on August 16, 2009, Independence Division officers responded to a 911 call for service in reference to an assault with a deadly weapon call advising one male had been shot. When officers arrived on scene, they located the victim lying on the ground outside of the apartment building suffering from a gunshot wound. Charlotte Fire Department and Medic arrived on scene, treated the victim and the victim was pronounced deceased shortly after by Medic.

Based on witness statements gathered during the preliminary investigation, the victim and another individual were on the second floor breezeway talking when they heard several shots being fired. As the victim attempted to run away he was shot. In addition, witnesses advised seeing a white male fleeing the scene on foot.

Detectives with the Homicide Unit, ADW Unit, and Independence Division officers conducted a neighborhood canvass. Crime Scene Search was on scene as well, photographed the scene and collected physical evidence.
