CHARLOTTE, N.C. — One person was killed in accident on Independence Boulevard in east Charlotte Monday morning.

The accident happened around 9 a.m. on Independence Boulevard and Fugate Avenue.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police say Caw Kam’s 2010 Toyota RAV4 was traveling in the left lane of Independence Boulevard when the vehicle suddenly veered right, crossing four lanes of traffic, and struck Siljie Grayston’s Volvo S90 in the driver’s side.

Grayston was stopped at a stop sign on Fugate waiting to make a right onto Independence with her two young sons.

Grayston was pronounced deceased on the scene.

Both of her sons, ages 1 and 3, were taken to Carolinas Medical Center for treatment. Police did not comment on the extent of their injuries.

Police determined driver fatigue is the contributing factor in the collision.

Kam was arrested on scene and charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle.

Police closed part of the outbound lane of Independence Boulevard while they investigated the accident. All lanes were reopened around 10:30 a.m.
