LINCOLN COUNTY, N.C. – The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office arrested a man they say hid a motorcycle and trailer, reported them stolen and filed a false insurance claim.

William Minford Chatham, III, 38, of Vale, was arrested on Monday and charged with two counts of felony insurance fraud.

Back in mid-October, authorities say Chatham reported that his enclosed trailer which contained a Harley Davidson FLHX Street Glide motorcycle, had been stolen. Officials say the items have a combined value of about $27,500.

Chatham then filed a claim with State Farm Insurance for the missing property, officials say, full knowing the claim contained false information.

In early-May, Shelby Police learned the trailer and motorcycle had been placed in a storage unit in the city, leading Lincoln County Sheriff’s Deputies to recover the items and file charges against Chatham.

Chatham posted his $5000 bail.
