A piece of garbage just like this one beat, raped and robbed a 95 year old woman in Wilmington two weeks ago.

The victim described her attacker as a clean-cut black man (close-cropped haircut and no facial hair), about 5’5’’, 160 pounds. She said he was wearing a wine-colored jacket with gold or yellow writing and dark pants. 30-35 years old.

In Peru when you are arrested you can be in jail up to 10 years without a trial....they have a prison in Lima with 10000 people at least in it....we should adapt their system here; there were close to 9000 burglaries in Charlotte in 2007, so we could fill a prison like that pretty quick

Form an interest group? From an academic and idealist standpoint that sounds like an appropriate response but how many years do you think it will take to see change that fairly reflects and benefits those good citizens who happen to be on Section 8 and their neighbors who aren't?

This issue is complicated and in line with the theory of Occam's Razor, probably the simplest explanation/solution is what will work.

I don't have faith in our city/state leaders to 1) recognize there's a problem, 2) devise a workable and enforceable plan, 3) put some of the onus on the beneficiaries of Section 8 (rental property owners including apartment complexes and renters) via "rules" that regular homeowners have to comform to lest they face a city fine. And this is not about "not in my backyard" because I believe everyone needs a helping hand. This is about accountability, personal responsibility, being good custodians of taxpayer dollars, trust, hope and truly creating a world class city.

This is a no-brainer to me. The problem seems to be that only the homeowners and good citizens who want to do the right thing everyday "see" and "experience" the problem while the city /state leaders only care about "social engineering" "political advancement" and putting a band-aid on "the cut" so there's no complete bleed out.

Anon 9:25... I agree and I think it's time for us to stop complaining about problems and form an interest group to lobby for reform. Why don't we start contacting our local government. We seem to be the only ones in this city that want to stop this non-sense.

Our local leaders won't do anything on their own, and the Observer tries to make excuses for offenders and kiss their ass. Why don't we start lobbying to fix these problems. We could be a great force considering no one else in Charlotte wants to stand up.

It's not just the apartments on Monroe Road and Idlewild. It's the apartments embedded on Monroe between Idlewild and Sharon Amity, the apartments behind the old Circuit City, the apartments on Thermal Road (Stonehaven East), the apartments on Village Lake Drive. I don't know how Section 8 works but it appears to work like, "here's a voucher, find a rental house or apartment anywhere." So it's not just apartments, it's vacant homes that are likely owned by folks living in new developments who use section 8 income to fund their new residence. Nothing wrong with that unless they become vacant landlords and let their section 8 rental property run down and don't monitor how many people truly live there. Who wants to see 10 cars piled up on the front lawn on a regular basis even if they are all parked in alignment with the driveway (city ordinance requirement). It seemed easier to manage the quality of low income tenants when they lived in housing projects. Remember that rule -- even if a grandchild was caught selling drugs the entire family was evicted? I think it should be required that homeowners/apartment owners and the City/Section 8 form an enforceable agreement that they will maintain property according to community standards and to offer conformity guidelines the section 8 renters. If they receive say 3 violations they have to relocate until they "get with the program." But handing out section 8 vouchers like grocery store coupons is negligence in my opinion by city leaders/apartment owners/rental property owners. I think it is interesting that now there is no low income housing downtown, Dilworth, Myers Park, Elizabeth so that entire geographic area is the "new suberb" and tne "new housing projects" are the apartments/section 8 housing scattered along corriders in SE Charlotte. Thank you city leaders for putting the ghetto on our doorstep.

Like I said in my post the other day about this killing. It turns out the suspect is a repeat offender. He knew just where to go to find what he wanted.

I live just a mile from this killing. I know all to well about the apartments across the street from the victims house.

It is nest of crime and vice.
The people who live there who are not POS live in fear of the Dirt bags that do live there and deal and live the thug life.

And even if the (S)uspect didn't live there. I would bet a dollar that he was there at the apartments for some lawless reason.

If the city can close down a hotel that is a hot bed of crime and vice why can't you close up and bulldoze an apartment complex that is a haven for crime and vice?
How many calls for service are needed? How many crimes are enough before action is taken.

It really has absolutely nothing to do with where the thugs live - they are going to other areas to commit their devious acts. My neighborhood in Wesley Chapel was hit a couple of years ago by several creeps from the N. Tryon area!! They went on a crime spree in this area that lasted a couple of weeks. Even "borrowed" a neighbors car as well as several others to commit their acts.

It is truly a sad state of affairs that you do not feel safe in your own neighborhood no matter where it is, because we are being invaded by trespassers! No wonder people are taking matters into their own hands. There aren't enough officers to handle all of the crime that is happening in the Charlotte and surrounding areas! All Charlotte has managed to do is spread the crime around or move it from one place to another and now its all over but wasn't this the plan? Section 8 apartments and housing all around the city. Thats like saying we have a criminal coming to your neighborhood soon.

The cops have a useless job. They round the criminals up and take them downtown and they are back on the streets in no time. I don't know how they do it..this has got to be the most discouraging job there is.
