Funeral Service Held Today for Toddler Hit-and-Run Victim

A funeral service was held this morning at the Macedonia Baptist Church on Hateras Avenue in North Charlotte for little William Perry, the Charlotte toddler who died in a hit-and-run crash last Saturday.

Friends and family gathered at a candlelight ceremony last night to remember the little boy.  His mom, Brittany Massey, still recovering from her injuries related to the crash, was unable to attend.  She was allowed to leave the hospital long enough to attend the funeral this morning, however.

18 month old Perry was killed when the car he was riding in was hit by Oscar Garcia-Fuentes in the intersection of Sharon Amity and Albermarle Roads.  Garcia-Fuentes fled the scene on foot and was picked up by police later the next morning.  The driver of the car, Tony Gabriel, was also killed and the baby’s mother was taken to CMC for non life threatening injuries.

Garcia-Fuentes was charged with Felony Hit and Run and Involuntary Manslaughter.  Garcia did not appear in district court on Tuesday because he was being interviews by ICE agents.  Garcia is in the country illegally, officials say.

According to Meckenburg County Sherriff Chip Bailey, if Garcia-Fuentes is convicted he would have to serve his sentence with the State of North Carolina before being deported.

The Perry Family has set up a trust fund for Brittany Massey through Wells Fargo.  If you’d like to contribute the Wells Fargo Account Number is 8006134475.
