Funeral to Be Held Wednesday for Mother, Son Killed in Wreck

AR-160829618The joint funeral for a Lincolnton mother and son who died during a violent wreck in Georgia earlier this month will be held on Wednesday.

The victims were Kyle William Garver, 20, and Tonya Lewis Curtis, 42, both of 3141 Laboratory Road, were killed died Jackson County, just northeast of Atlanta, on Aug. 10 while driving to Atlanta on I-85 South.

Around 9:40 a.m., Curtis, who was driving, swerved in the 2004 Ford Excursion and overcorrected, causing the vehicle to veer off the road before overturning and rolling multiple times. The car then hit a tree, the Georgia State Patrol said.

Garver, who had been riding in the backset behind Curtis and was not wearing a seatbelt, was thrown from the SUV, the accident report shows. Everyone else in the vehicle had been wearing seatbelt.

Tonya Curtis’ husband, Jerry Curtis, 44, had been riding in the front seat passenger and Garver’s girlfriend, Evelyn Smith, 19, of Cherryville, was also in the vehicle. They were both injured and taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville for treatment.

The Curtises are the owners of Curtis Upholstery, a small family furniture company that makes handmade and customized furniture in Crouse, for the last 20 years.

Tonya Curtis’ sister, Tabatha Lloyd, had written on Facebook that the victims had been driving to a furniture show in Atlanta while towing a trailer with over $15,000 worth of furniture orders.

Lloyd said she believes the trailer was disrupted by a gust of wind from a passing transfer truck, which caused the swerve.

The funeral service is set to be held on Wednesday at 2 p.m. at New Vision Ministries. A burial will follow at Gainsville Baptist Church cemetery.
