Geese Attacked, School Buses Vandalized

The maintenance director for the Kennedy Charter School on Sharon Road West was in for a surprise when he arrived on the school grounds Monday morning. He found bloody geese, suffering from shattered bones, all the windows of a school bus smashed, and several windows on the buildings shattered as well.

According to police, surveillance video from the school shows five teenagers damaging the property and using rocks and a board to attack the geese around 6pm Sunday evening.

Two of the geese were taken to Monroe Animal Hospital and treated for broken bones- one with a broken leg and the other with a broken wing. A third is being treated at Carolina Waterfowl Rescue for mild cuts to his face. Authorities say a fourth one is missing and suspected dead.

Federal law says penalties for harming Canadian geese can go up to $10,000. The cost of the damage to the school bus and building is at more than $1,000.

Police are continuing to review the surveillance video and say charges have not been filed as of yet. According to school officials, three of the five suspects have been identified as students from another school.
