GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) – Charges have been upgraded against a Greenville man arrested in the death of an 11-week-old infant last week.

Greenville County sheriff’s deputies said Monday that 26-year-old Tarran M. Edwards had been charged with homicide by child abuse.

Edwards was originally arrested last week and charged with abuse causing serious injury.

Deputies were called to a home a week ago about a baby who was unresponsive. Medical personnel said the baby had been physically abused, and Syre Umar Parks died Nov. 20 at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Charges against Edwards were upgraded after the baby’s death. Edwards was jailed without bond, and it wasn’t known if he had an attorney.
