GASTONIA, N.C. – Police say a Gastonia man assaulted a handicapped man then fled and struggled with officers Monday.

According to arrest records, Terence La’Var Stevens, 20, punched a 50-year-old man. The man had a bad knee and hip and required the use of a cane. He was in bed at the time of the incident, according to police reports.

When a police officer tried to place Stevens under arrest, he struggled and ran. Eventually, police caught and charged Stevens.

He was placed in Gaston County Jail on a $5,000 secured bond.
