CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C. — North Carolina Highway Patrol troopers were actively searching for the vehicle which struck and killed a person on Highway 321 in Catawba County early Monday morning.
First responders were called to the crash scene on Highway 321 just south of Interstate 40 around 7:15 a.m.
Troopers said the vehicle responsible is a gray 1999 or 2000 Honda Civic. It should have extensive front-end damage and a the windshield should be shattered.
The highway was shut down to one lane as investigators gathered clues. They were able to determine the make and model of the car because pieces of it were laying next to the victim in the median.
Troopers think the Civic hit the victim and then crashed into two or three barrier posts in the median before driving off.
Investigators expect to be on scene all morning.
Officials have not released the name of the person who was killed. If you see the car described with front end damage and a shattered windshield you are asked to call police.
