Landis Woman Sentenced to 36 Months Probation for Starving Horses

landis_woman_jpgPolice said a woman in Rowan County has been found guilty of animal abuse for starving five horses last year.

Teresa Burkett was found guilty of multiple counts of animal abuse by a judge on Wednesday. She was sentenced to serve probation for 36 months, during which time she won’t be allowed to own horses, court officials said.

The abuse occurred in October and four horses survived. They have been gaining weight since then through veterinary care and diet with the help of Rowan County Animal Control. They have been able to gain at least 100 pounds already, but it can take up to a year for them to fully recover, according to experts.

Rowan County Animal Shelter is seeking public donations to help with the thousands of dollars in medical bills for the horses. Those interested in providing assistance or donating feed can contact the animal shelter at 704-216-7768.
