Man Attacks, Steals Car of Elderly Woman at Harris Teeter in Charlotte

ScottieBarringerA Charlotte man was arrested and charged late Thursday for pushing an 83-year-old woman to the ground and stealing her car and purse.

Two men helped with trying to stop the man, during which one of the men was pushed to the ground and his leg was run over by the car, police said.

The theft occurred about 11:20 a.m. outside Harris Teeter located on South Sharon Amity Road in the Cotswold Shopping Center.

Barringer attacked the woman as she was exiting her car. Two witnesses ran to help the woman immediately, trying to get the assailant out of the car. One of the witnesses, a Harris Teeter employee, said after he heard the woman scream, he ran over to see the man attacking the elderly woman. The witness then jumped in, but the assailant began biting and punching him before running the witness’s leg over in the car.

Scottie McNeil Barringer, 34, was caught after an officer saw him driving the 2006 silver Toyota Corolla owned by the elderly woman. Police pulled the suspect over into a parking lot located in the 3200 block of Eastway Drive.

The injured witness and the woman were transported to Carolinas Medical Center. Police said they sustained serious non life-threatening injuries.

The woman had a broken hip. The employee was released after being treated, according to WBTV.

Barringer was taken into custody without further incident and has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, robbery with a dangerous weapon, assault causing serious bodily injury, and larceny of a motor vehicle. He is jailed on $275,000 bail.
