Man Charged With Murder, Child Abuse When A 1-Year Old Was Found Dead

LONG VIEW, N.C. – Police have charged a man after a toddler was found dead, and another child was injured.

Friday afternoon, first responders were dispatched to a residence on 25th Street Northwest for a report of a cardiac arrest.

When they arrived, authorities reported finding a one-and-a-half-year-old boy dead, and his 3-year-old sister suffering from injuries.  The little girl was taken to Frye Medical Center for treatment with severe burns along her head and back.  Her condition is still unknown at this time..

The children’s mother was not home at the time of the child’s death, according to officials, and the kids were under her boyfriend’s supervision.

Friday night authorities arrested Mr. Lail and charged him with murder in the death of the 18-month-old. Lail also faces two counts of felony child abuse and is charged with violating his probation.

Authorities at the Catawba County Detention Facility said he is being held without bond on the murder charge.  He is being held on $100,000 secured bond on the child abuse charges, according to the detention center web site.  His first court appearance on the murder and child abuse charges is Monday in district court, according to the web site.

He was also charged with failure to appear for resisting a public officer, failure to report an accident, and misdemeanor probation violation. His bond on those charges is $2,000.

The toddler’s cause of death is not yet known.
