Man Dies While Being Detained By Police

Crime Scene TapeCHARLOTTE, N.C. – Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Homicide Detectives are investigating the death of a man who died shortly after being detained by police on Friday morning.

At 8:30, officers responded to the 3400 block of Mathis Drive for an active assault call involving two men, one of which was reportedly armed, according to the 911 caller.

When officers arrived on the scene, the immediately separated and detained the two men, and noticed one of them was suffering from “obvious signs of trauma” from the altercation between the men. Then, police say, the victim stopped breathing and became unresponsive.

MEDIC, who was already on scene at that point, transported the man to Carolina Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The other man was arrested and transported to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department for further questioning.

The name of the victim has not yet been released pending the notification of next of kin. The nature of his injuries is not yet known.

The arrested subject, too, has not been named, and police have not said yet what charges have been or will be filed against him.

Internal Affairs is conducting a parallel investigation in this case, as is standard procedure when a subject dies while in police custody.

Meanwhile, the 3400 block of Mathis Drive is shutdown while officials conduct their investigation.
