CHARLOTTE, N.C. – One person was killed in an accident on Steele Creek Road on Wednesday morning.

The accident happened in the 10500 block of Steele Creek Road near Brown Grier Road around 9 a.m. Emergency crews had to extract one person, a 56-year-old female, from her Volkswagen Passat.

Police say 23-year-old Trungquan Le Tran fell asleep at the wheel of his 2009 Honda Accord as he headed southbound on Steele Creek Road. Tran crossed the double-yellow line into oncoming traffic and struck the victim’s Passat.

The victim, who has not yet been identified pending the notification of next of kin, was airlifted from the scene and later died at the hospital, according to officials.

Tran was arrested and charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle.

Neither speed nor alcohol appear to be factors in the crash, police say.
