Matthews Police Remind Residents to Take Caution After Phone Scams

iphoneMatthews police are receiving reports that phone scammers are calling homes in the area pretending to be Duke Energy officials. Police warn residents to protect their personal information.

When the scammers call residents, they say the residents owe money to Duke Energy and must pay the balance immediately or have their power shut off, said Matthews Police Officer Tim Aycock.

According to Aycock, the scammer asks residents to put the money on a prepaid Green Dot card to give them access to the funds.

Scammers frequently pose as employees from official, legitimate sounding companies or organizations such as the Internal Revenue Service, Aycock said.

Police are reminding residents to never give out personal information, especially over the phone, until they can verify that the caller represents or is the company or organization they claim to be calling for, he said.
