Mayor Pro Tem of Matthews Arrested for Assault Over Weekend

JosephPatamugshotPolice arrested Joseph Pata, Matthews Mayor Pro Tem, on Saturday and charged him with misdemeanor suspicion of assault inflicting serious injury.

Police were called to the home of Pata, 54, on Reverdy Oaks Drive Friday night. According to a news release from the Matthews Police Department, a woman who lived in the home with Pata was found with injuries that seemed to be from physical assault.

Police took the woman to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries to her head. Police said Pata appeared to be influenced by alcohol and they put him on a 48-hour domestic violence hold. He was arrested.

Pata was released Monday morning, Mecklenburg County jail records show.

According to Matthews Mayor Jim Taylor, action to Pata’s mayor pro tem status and his appointed positions are being considered by the board of commissioners. Unless Pata is convicted of a crime, he cannot be removed from office.

A resolution on the matter could be reached by Tuesday afternoon or latest on Wednesday, Taylor said.

Pata filed for re-election as Mayor Pro Tem on July 16 for the vote in November. He is an employee of Bank of America.
