Murder Weapon Identified in Killing, Dismemberment of Monroe Man

mccarthyPolice arrested a man on Thursday in connection with the killing and dismembering of a Monroe man whose remains were found on Saturday in Stallings, North Carolina Bureau of Investigation special agents said.

41-year-old Keith Edward McCarthy of Monroe has been charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon, first-degree murder, and concealing the death of the victim, 41-year-old Jaime Toledo Hernandez, also of Monroe.

According to investigators, McCarthy murdered Hernandez at his Monroe house on Tucker Street before dumping the body’s remains into a barrel and leavings it in the woods 20 minutes from the home in Stallings.

An aluminum bat was the murder weapon used, according to the SBI. Officials believe robbery was the primary motive and that McCarthy also stole $1,381 from Hernandez.

McCarthy had asked for a public defender while in court on Friday and he was denied bond.
