The incident occurred about 10:30 a.m. According to police, the officer is Michelle Brcik. Brcik had confronted the driver of a truck that broke down when she realized the vehicle was one that had been stolen from a home invasion the previous week.
The suspect, 32-year-old Darryll Douglas Clay, exited the truck with a gun and Brcik deployed her Taser. Then the confrontation escalated quickly into an exchange of gunfire, police said.
Brcik suffered a hand injury from falling during the incident, but she wasn’t shot.
Clay ran and attempted to carjack two motorists before running into the woods. He was caught and sent to Carolinas Medical Center for an illness unrelated to the shooting. After release, he will receive charges for the incident, according to police.
An investigation will be conducted by the Internal Affairs Bureau of the police department and Brcik will be put on administrative leave, which is a standard procedure for when a shooting happens involving an officer.
