HICKORY, N.C. — Police in Hickory are investigating an officer-involved shooting that has left a man dead Monday morning.
Officers said the shooting happened at the Kangaroo Express on North Center Street shortly before 4 a.m.
Officials had the parking lot of the gas station roped off with crime scene tape Monday morning.
Police said no officers were hurt and the SBI was on the scene investigating.
According to Hickory police, two of their officers were questioning the driver of a City of Hickory work truck in the parking lot of the gas station around 3:40 a.m.
Police said the truck had heavy damage to the right side of the vehicle and officers recognized the driver from a fight call on Sunday night at McCroskey’s Irish Pub and Grill.
While speaking to the driver, officers said the man pointed a handgun at them. They were able to retreat from the truck and shot the man, killing him, according to police.
Police said video of the incident was captured by surveillance video but are not releasing that video at this time.
Officers were able to determine the truck was stolen from a City of Hickory employee on Cloninger Mill Road and that that employee’s personal vehicle was broken into and items were stolen from it.
Hickory police have not released either the name of the suspect killed or the two officers involved.
The SBI is investigating to shooting and the Hickory Police Department will conduct its own separate investigation as well.
The two officers have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, which is standard procedure after an officer-involved shooting.
