CONWAY, S.C. – A man who was pardoned from a life sentence for murder in 2001 has been charged with beating a Conway woman.

Horry County police have charged 54-year-old James Franklin Johnson with criminal domestic violence.

Johnson was serving a life sentence for a 1977 murder conviction when he was pardoned in 2001.

A 36-year-old Conway woman told police that Johnson took her cellphone when she tried to call 911 on Tuesday and the two began arguing.

The woman escaped and called police. She said Johnson hit her in the face several times between Friday and Tuesday. She was taken to a hospital for treatment of her injuries.
