ROCK HILL, S.C. –  A man wanted for allegedly stealing $6,000 worth of jewelry from a Rock Hill home last week hid under the blankets of a motel bed when police knocked on his room door, according to authorities.

Tuesday morning, police searched for Michael Brandon Rash, 24, and his girlfriend, Misty Brooks, 22, at the Rock Hill Motel on Riverview Road, according to a Rock Hill police report.

When they went to Brooks’ room at the motel, police could “clearly see” a man hiding under the blankets on the bed, the report states. Officers told him to discard the blankets, unveiling Rash, who an officer identified from a DMV photo.

Police found .7 grams of heroin, used syringes, two digital scales, a glass pipe encrusted with black residue, several cellphones and numerous pieces of jewelry in the room, police said.

A detective identified the jewelry as the same items stolen from a man who last week reported that someone broke into his house and stole $6,000 worth of jewelry, including 21 loose diamonds and five rings, according to police.

On Tuesday, police returned the stolen jewelry to the owner and charged Rash with shoplifting and burglary and Brooks with failure to identify. By Wednesday morning, the couple was still in jail waiting for an afternoon bond hearing.
