Police Searching For Gunman Involved In Shootout With Police

ShootoutCHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police reopened a busy street just outside of uptown Tuesday morning after a shootout between police and a gunman near Johnson C. Smith University late Monday night.

Officers were originally called out to the 1800 block of West Trade Street just before 10:45 p.m. after someone claimed a man with a gun had threatened them.

When the first officers arrived they saw a man who matched that description and when they tried to approach him he ran off.

According to police, as the man was running away he fired several shots at officers.

Officer Christopher Miranda returned fire, but police do not believe the suspect was hit.

No officers were struck by gunfire either.

Police closed Trade Street near West 5th Street and several surrounding roads overnight as dozens of officers searched for the gunman, but no arrests have been made. Trade Street was reopened around 6 a.m. Tuesday.

Police described the shooter as a light-skinned black man wearing a black t-shirt and black shorts. He was last seen running down West 5th Street towards Flint Street.

Officer Miranda has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the shooting investigation — which is standard procedure with any officer involved shooting.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call 704-432-TIPS and speak directly to a Homicide Unit detective.
