Rock Hill Man Tried to Sell Phone Back to Owner, Assaulted Officers

IMG_1365Police have accused a man of giving them a fake name and assaulting officers as he resisted arrested. He is also suspected of attempting to resell a stolen cell phone back to its owner, Rock Hill police records show.

21-year-old Quavis Ponds has been charged with giving false information to police, third-degree assault and battery, two counts of resisting arrest, and damage to personal property, according to police records.

As of Wednesday, Ponds was still held on $31,445 bond in Rock Hill city jail.

The police incident report shows that Ponds is accused of assaulting a man at a gas station on Celanese Road Tuesday night. Officers noticed the 64-year-old man was bleeding from his head due to several cuts.

The man told police his phone had been stolen on Wednesday last week. He had since replaced the phone, but later got a text message saying he could get his phone back for $200 at a Riverchase Boulevard business, according to the police report.

Ponds and the victim had met outside a Rock Hill restaurant on Tuesday and Ponds was confronted by the phone owner. Then Ponds punched the man in the face and hit the man in the face with the stolen phone, which he had pulled from his back pocket, according to records.

The victim’s story was also confirmed by witnesses, the police report shows.

Ponds’ fiancee told officers later that Ponds had arrived home with the phone and attempted to sell it to friends and online.

When officers arrested Ponds at the scene, he gave them the name and birthdate of his brother as his identification. He also smelled of alcohol, police records show.

While resisting arrest, officers said Ponds kicked them in the knee, chest, elbow, and belt.
