SALISBURY, N.C. – The main US Post Office was evacuated in Salisbury after a suspicious package was reported Wednesday.
Around 1:30 p.m., a customer at the post office on E. Innes Street said that a package, which did not have a return address, looked suspicious and showed it to a person standing next to her. That person then advised her not to open the package.
A postal worker told everyone to evacuate as a precaution.
The Salisbury Fire Department, was staged at the scene while Salisbury Police, Federal Postal Inspectors, Rowan County Sheriff’s deputies and Cabarrus County sheriff’s deputies looked at the package.
The Cabarrus County Bomb Squad was called in, and “rendered [the] device inoperable” just before 5:30.
Officials said they still did not know what exactly the package contained.
All three streets surrounding the post office were closed to traffic. This includes South Clay Street, East Fisher Street and Martin Luther King Jr Avenue.
