CrimeInCharlotte.com Voted '2007 Best Of the Best' Local Blog

I found out today that Charlotte Magazine named crimeincharlotte.com as the '2007 Best of the Best' Local Blog. (Shown in the service category)

They didn't get all the facts straight (I don't post every mugshot) but it is still an honor...

Local blog
CrimeInCharlotte.com
When the D.A.’s office dropped the case against the punk who stole her car and then totaled it last year, Kelly was “smoking mad” and started a blog. She posts mug shots of every person booked at the jail, crime-scene photos, police report summaries, and more. Cops support her cause, and they often feed her info. There’s also a handy list of links to all manner of law-enforcement sites.

My Nomination for America's Most Wanted 'All-Star' Contest

America's Most Wanted is currently holding an 'All-Star' contest to award Law Enforcement Officers, Fire Fighters, EMT's, etc., who have gone above and beyond the call of duty. I submitted an All-Star nomination for CMPD Officer Kayvan Hazrati.

After I attended the NC -v- Ellerbe trial and heard the details of what happened the day Officer Kayvan Hazrati was shot, I learned the real meaning of 'hero.' Many of the Officers who were there that day are heroes but thankfully they were able to walk away physically unharmed. Officer Hazrati did not.

I heard from AMW the following day and was told the Producers needed to review the nomination because the 'heroism' was supposed to have occurred in 2007, and Ofc. Hazrati was shot in 2006. Today, I got the bad news... the Producers declined to accept the nomination.

Even though you won't see it on AMW, I would like to share my submission with you.

"Why is this person an All-Star?"
On April 5th, 2006, Officer Kayvan Hazrati was working with the VCAT (Violent Criminal Apprehension Team) when he was shot in the head while serving a warrant on Christopher Ellerbe, a rape suspect wanted in South Carolina.

Christopher Ellerbe wouldn’t come out of his brother’s home and police were unable to make contact with him by phone. The VCAT team covered all the doors in the home in an attempt to make verbal contact with Ellerbe and coax him out of the home or catch him if he tried to escape. Officer Hazrati was covering a side door as several other Officers went to the back door in an attempt to communicate with the suspect.

When Officers announced themselves at the back door, Christopher Ellerbe fired shots at them and they ran for cover. When Officer Hazrati heard shots being fired at his fellow officers, he attempted to enter the residence from the side door. As Officer Hazrati tried to break through the side door, Christopher Ellerbe shot him in the head.

No doubt, Officer Kayvan Hazrati is a hero! He was shot in the line of duty trying to protect his fellow Officers and it is a miracle he survived the attack! Officer Hazrati suffered severe brain damage as a result of the gunshot wound and suffers from severe pain 24/7.

Since his injury, Officer Hazrati has refused to give up and has gone through an astounding amount of various therapies to get to where he is today! Sadly, he still suffers from constant pain and fatigue but has made tremendous strides in so many other ways.

Last month, Officer Hazrati faced the man who shot him in court. The Defendant, Christopher Ellerbe, represented himself in the courtroom and questioned Officer Hazrati for nearly two hours. Despite his pain and other effects from his injuries, Officer Hazrati took the stand and remained strong and professional throughout the whole trial. Christopher Ellerbe was found guilty on all charges and was sentenced to 66 years in prison.

Unfortunately, Officer Hazrati will serve a life sentence of pain and will have to deal with the permanent effects of his brain injury.

Although Officer Hazrati and his wife Heidi have suffered so much and continue to deal with the effects of his injury, they want to help other people! The Hazrati’s have started The April Five Organization, a non-profit organization to help Officers who have been injured in the line of duty. I believe Officer Hazrati deserves an AMW All-Star nomination as he is a hero in so many ways!

** Some good news... Injured Burke County Sheriff Deputy Martin Lawing is a finalist after he won last week's All-Star contest! Let's hope he wins!!

Blue Ribbon Campaign a Success!!

The blue ribbon campaign and donation drive we held Saturday was a success! We raised $2,200 for the Clark and Shelton families and handed out hundreds of blue ribbons to show support for our police officers!

I could not have done it alone and I have so many people to thank who came out with little or no notice to help out! I cannot even begin to tell you how much your help means to me. We will be out again soon so all those who could not make it on Saturday will have another opportunity to help. I promise I will give more notice next time!

Thank you to Sergeant Geiler who came out on his day off to represent the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #9 and assist in collect funds for the fallen officers families. Thank you to the all the Independence Division Police Officers, Chief Darrel Stephens, Julie Hill and many other officers, members of the F.O.P. Lodge #9 and other police folk who stopped by to show support and lend a helping hand. A special thank you to Officer Scanlon (who worked all last night) and his wife Tammy for coming to help.

The men and women who work at the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department are truly an amazing group! They are always there when you need them in an emergency but they are also there when you need them in non-emergency situations as well.

A huge thank you to Larry Bumgarner who has helped so much with both ribbon drives and has donated so much including his time, ribbon, drinks, supplies, beautiful framed photos of the fallen officers to display and especially for the back of his car- which was well used on both windy days!

Thank you to Rise Ward who came armed with blue ribbon and stood out in the cold with us for hours helping hand out blue ribbons and collect donations. Thank you to Carolyn McCaskill who brought TONS of blue ribbon, a huge platter filled with cold cuts & cheese, croissants and condiments galore! Also, Carolyn has worked tirelessly hanging beautiful blue ribbons on Seneca Place & Tyvola Rd. areas to show support for the police.

Thank you to O'Charley's restaurant on Sardis Road for bringing food and drinks and to Value City Department Store for allowing us to use their parking lot!

Most of all, thank you to the citizens of Charlotte for coming together to show our police officers how much we appreciate them! It is terrible it took such a tragedy for us to let them know we care but it came at a time they needed it most... and I hope it never ends!

Teen YouTube Video on FOX News Geraldo 'At-Large' Show

Geraldo featured the Charlotte Teen Youtube video on the FOX News 'At-Large' show tonight.

Imagine my surprise to see the video of the two Charlotte brothers I posted about on this site weeks ago!

As far as I know, the full video and information about the teen brothers isn't posted anywhere else on the internet except here at crimeincharlotte.com.

I was excited so I couldn't resist grabbing my camera to take a picture of the TV...

Who Killed Tina Virgil?

Tina Louise Virgil disappeared in late February or March of 2006. Tina's sister was worried when she didn't hear from her sister after three weeks so she called CMPD and made a 'Missing Person' report.

Tina Virgil lived at 1500 Greenview Place with her boyfriend Rayford Leon Thomas. Virgil and Thomas had a history of domestic violence and both were arrested one month prior to her disappearance for assaulting each other.

CMPD followed up on the Missing Person report in May and December 2006. Detectives spoke with Virgil's sisters and attempted to contact her boyfriend Rayford Thomas in December. Thomas said he would come to the police station to be interviewed but he never showed up.

On March 22, 2006, loggers in Anson County discovered a large garbage bag in a creek on Smith-Ferry Rd. The bag contained a woman's body. Police interviewed the one resident who lives on Smith-Ferry Rd. He told police he saw a suspicious small blue or purple pick-up truck drive down the road three to four days before loggers found the body. The man said he remembered seeing the truck because it drove down the road at a high rate of speed and twenty minutes later, the same truck came speeding back down the road. He saw one person in the truck but he couldn't tell if they were male or female.

Detectives in Anson County and the SBI were unable to identify the body until February 26, 2007. Dental records confirmed the woman found in Anson County last March was 42-year old Tina Louise Virgil. Police said Virgil was a homicide victim and say she was killed by blunt force trauma.

On February 20, 2007, a Special Agent with the SBI interviewed Rayford Thomas. He told the agent he last saw Tina Virgil on March 8, 2006. Thomas said he and Virgil had an argument and Tina walked out the door never to be heard from again. He said Tina did not pack a bag and he never looked for her. He said he gave Tina's clothes to his ex-wife. In addition, Thomas stated his parents are from Anson County and the agent noted he drives a blue/grey pick-up truck.

On March 5, 2007, a search warrant was issued to search Thomas' truck. Crime scene technicians took swabs from the truck and seized the truck bed cover, a tire iron and a Spear .380 spent shell casing. The search warrant did not detail the items they collected from the home.

Oddly enough, Aaron Wood was found shot to death seven days ago on March 7, 2007 at 1501 Greenview Place... one house away from Thomas. CMPD, SBI and the Anson County Sheriff's Office are working together to solve the Virgil case.

"Ask an Officer..."

In the blog survey, many of you asked that I conduct more interviews with CMPD Police Officers and other public/elected officials. I thought this was a great idea so I'm going to start with "Ask an Officer..."

If you have a general question you'd like to ask a CMPD Officer, please CLICK HERE.

I will include as many of your questions as possible and post the results of the Q&A's here.

* If you are a CMPD Officer & wish to participate, please e-mail me.
