MOUNT PLEASANT, N.C. – A silver alert has been cancelled as a missing Cabarrus County woman was found alive.

Dorothy Schnabel, 68, was located by searchers, lying in water of a ravine near her home and taken to the hospital.

A Silver Alert was issued out of Cabarrus County for the missing woman, who authorities say suffers from Alzheimer’s.

Authorities say Mrs. Schnabel left her home in the 2400 block of Dutch Road around 4 p.m. on Tuesday to walk her dog.

By 6:30, her husband had returned home, and realized Dorothy herself had not yet returned from her walk.

Search teams actively looked for her, and Dorothy was found lying in the water of a ravine near her home on Wednesday morning.  Her dog was found with her, having stayed with Mrs. Schnabel all night long.  Dutchess, a brown Doberman Pinscher, is herself a rescue dog.

The Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office says Dorothy was awake and talking with rescuers.

The Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office credits the North Carolina Highway Patrol and use of their helicopter as “invaluable” in the effort to locate Dorothy.
